Baseball, Giant Hail, and a Texas-Sized Atmosphere

The New York Yankees are in Arlington tonight to play the Texas Rangers. Fans are packing into Globe Life Field, and the stadium roof is definitely staying closed. That is a very good thing. Out in the parking lot, the atmosphere is incredibly volatile.

Here is the thing, y'all. We have a Moderate Risk for severe thunderstorms across North Texas through this evening. That is a level 4 out of 5. It covers over 6.4 million people in Dallas, Fort Worth, Plano, and right there in Arlington where the game is happening.

The Giant Hail Threat

The main event with these initial storms is the hail. The Storm Prediction Center is explicitly warning about very large to giant hail. We are talking 2 to 4 inches in diameter, and possibly larger. Hail that size will total a windshield in a hurry. It will also put some serious dents in any tailgating plans.

Why is this happening? We have a robust westerly flow high up in the atmosphere. A low-pressure trough is kicking out into the Plains right now. Down at the surface, a plume of deep Gulf of Mexico moisture is streaming northward. Dallas normally sees average highs around 77 degrees this time of year. Today's heat and that rich moisture are acting like premium fuel for these supercells.

The Threat Moves East

The danger does not stop at the Texas state line. There is an Enhanced Risk stretching through Shreveport, Little Rock, and all the way up to Memphis.

As these storms move east tonight, they will likely merge. That means the threat transitions from isolated giant hail to a line of severe, damaging winds. We are also watching a Slight Risk for excessive rainfall from the ArkLaTex region through the Deep South. A stalled front along the Red River is acting like a set of train tracks. These storms are just going to keep rolling over the exact same areas, dumping heavy rain and raising the flash flood risk.

Yesterday was a heavy, exhausting day for folks in the Midwest. We saw catastrophic damage and a tragic loss of life. Today, the Southern Plains and the Mid-South are on the clock.

If you are at the game tonight, your car might take a beating. If you are at home in DFW, Shreveport, or Memphis, keep your phone loud. Have a way to get warnings that will actually wake you up.
