Arctic Blast & Snow Squalls: Weekend Weather Update Feb 6, 2026
Dangerous cold and snow squalls target the Northeast while the Plains see a massive warm-up. Plus, atmospheric river impacts for the PNW.

Dangerously Cold, Snow Squalls, and the 'False Spring' Tease
Alright folks, grab your coffee and let's talk. We have been tracking some wild swings this week. Yesterday we were talking about record heat out West and ice down South, but today the story has shifted gears big time. If you are anywhere from the Great Lakes to the Northeast, winter is not just knocking on the door today. It is kicking it down.
Here is the thing. We are seeing a setup right now that is going to make it feel like the middle of January all over again for the East Coast, while the Central U.S. is about to get a taste of what I like to call "False Spring."
The East Coast Deep Freeze
I need y'all to take this seriously. An Arctic front is sweeping through today and tonight, and it is bringing some genuinely dangerous air with it. We are talking about wind chills dropping between -15°F and -35°F across parts of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic.

If you are heading out to the Richmond Chocolate, Wine & Whiskey Festival or the Charlotte Wine Festival tomorrow, you need to layer up like you are going on an expedition. The wind is going to be howling. We are looking at gusts up to 60 mph in some spots. That cuts right through a hoodie, folks. This kind of cold can cause frostbite on exposed skin in minutes, so don't try to be a hero.
Watch Out for Snow Squalls
This is one of the trickiest parts of this forecast. As this cold front punches through today, it is triggering snow squalls across Pennsylvania, New York, and down into the Appalachians.
If you have never driven through one, it is terrifying. You can be driving on a sunny road one minute, and 30 seconds later, you can't see the hood of your car. It is a wall of white. If you see a dark cloud bank ahead that looks like a summer thunderstorm but it's 20 degrees out, slow down immediately. These squalls create instant black ice and zero visibility.
Meanwhile, the Lake Effect machine is cranking. Upstate New York, especially off Lake Ontario and Lake Erie, is getting buried. Some spots could see snowfall rates of 2 to 3 inches per hour. That is not driving weather. That is "stay home and make chili" weather.
Pacific Northwest: The Soaker Returns
We haven't forgotten about the West Coast. While the record heat in Southern California has broken (thankfully), the Pacific Northwest is reloading.
Starting Saturday, a new atmospheric river is aiming for Washington and Oregon. This isn't a monster storm, but it's going to be persistent. The Olympic Peninsula is under a Marginal Risk for excessive rainfall, meaning we could see 2 to 3 inches of rain. Because freezing levels are jumping around, we might see some messiness in the passes before it turns to all rain at lower elevations.
The 'False Spring' in the Plains
Now, for some good news—or a tease, depending on how you look at it. While the East freezes, a massive ridge is building in the center of the country.
Check this out: Parts of the Dakotas and Nebraska are going to see highs in the 50s and 60s this weekend. That is 20 to 30 degrees above average for early February. It is going to feel amazing, but remember—it is still February. Enjoy it, get outside, maybe hit up a park, but don't pack away the winter coats just yet. Winter usually has a few more punches to throw.

A Quick Note on Space Weather
I know a lot of y'all saw the news about those solar flares earlier this week. We are still in a G1 (Minor) Geomagnetic Storm watch. It's not going to fry your electronics, but if you are in the northern tier states and the skies clear up (and you brave the cold), you might catch a glimpse of the aurora. Just another reason to look up.
Bottom Line
- Northeast/Mid-Atlantic: Dangerous wind chills and snow squalls are the main threat through Saturday. Travel with extreme caution.
- Pacific Northwest: Heavy rain returns Saturday. Watch for ponding on roads and slick passes.
- The Plains: Enjoy the warm-up, but keep in mind it's temporary.
- Super Bowl Fans: If you're heading to Santa Clara or watching from home, the extreme heat has broken, so conditions look much more comfortable for the big game.
Stay warm and stay safe, y'all!
