Severe Weather Threatens Kansas City Baseball This Weekend
A severe weather outbreak and flash flood threat target Kansas City this Saturday, threatening the Astros-Royals game and weekend outdoor plans.

Friday Night Fretboards and a Rough Saturday for Kansas City Baseball
Happy Friday, y'all. If you are in Brooklyn tonight for the Guitar Festival at Warsaw, or catching the Mets host the Braves in Queens, keep one eye on the sky. We have a Slight Risk of severe weather draped right over the I-95 corridor. We are talking about isolated 60 mph wind gusts that could easily knock out power or send festival tents flying.
But get this. The biggest weather headache of the weekend is setting up for Saturday right over the heart of the country. The Houston Astros are in Kansas City to play the Royals tomorrow evening. If you have tickets to Kauffman Stadium, or if you are just firing up the smoker for a Saturday barbecue, you need a backup plan.
The Kansas City Setup
The Storm Prediction Center has an Enhanced Risk for eastern Kansas and western Missouri on Saturday. That is a level 3 out of 5 for severe weather. A potent cold front is going to crash into a very warm, sticky airmass. Kansas City normally tops out around 84 degrees in mid-June. Tomorrow, that heat and humidity will act like high-octane fuel.
By the afternoon, we expect clusters of thunderstorms to erupt. The data shows a 30 percent chance of numerous damaging wind gusts, and the strongest ones could exceed 75 mph. We are also looking at a hatched risk for hail. That means hailstones could reach 2 inches across. That is the size of a hen egg, and it will absolutely dent your car in the stadium parking lot. There is also a 5 percent risk for a few tornadoes, so you cannot let your guard down.
The Flash Flood Threat
It is not just the wind and hail. The Weather Prediction Center has issued a Moderate Risk for excessive rainfall right over the Kansas City metro. This is a level 3 out of 4 for flash flooding.
We expect these storms to train over the exact same areas back-to-back.
When heavy rain falls on the same ground for hours, the drainage systems simply cannot keep up. That is a classic recipe for life-threatening flash flooding. If you are driving to the game or heading out for the night and see water over the road, turn around. It only takes a few inches of moving water to sweep a vehicle away.
A Quick Look Up
On a completely different note, we have some action happening way above the clouds. A coronal hole high-speed stream is hitting Earth's magnetic field right now. We are looking at G2, or Moderate, geomagnetic storming through Saturday. If you live up north and actually get a break in the clouds, you might catch the northern lights.
Weather dictates our weekend plans. A quick radar check makes the difference between a great memory and a ruined night. Keep your weather radio handy and your phone charged.
