Gulf Coast Rain and Florida Severe Weather Forecast: May 1
Heavy rain continues for Texas and Louisiana today before the severe weather threat shifts into Georgia and Florida on Saturday. See the full weekend forecast.

Gulf Coast Soaking Continues While Florida Braces for Weekend Storms
Good morning, y'all. We made it to Friday. As we talked about yesterday, that stalled front over Texas is still causing headaches, and it is going to dictate a lot of our weekend plans across the South.
We are watching a transition right now. The atmosphere is shifting the main threat from Texas floods today over to a severe weather setup for the Southeast on Saturday.
The Gulf Coast Water Hose
Here is the thing about today. The Weather Prediction Center has kept a Slight Risk for excessive rainfall draped right across central and southeast Texas, stretching eastward along the central Gulf Coast.
We have a boundary that is just stuck. Moisture is pooling along it, and storms are going to keep firing over the same areas from Houston over to New Orleans. If you are flying out of those major Texas or Louisiana hubs today, you need to expect ground stops and delays. The rain is going to be heavy and persistent.
Saturday's Severe Shift
Alright folks, let us look ahead to Saturday. That upper-level trough is finally going to pivot eastward. When it does, it is going to drag that weather system right into the Southeast.
The Storm Prediction Center has highlighted a Slight Risk for severe thunderstorms across far southern Georgia and north-central Florida for Saturday. We are talking about places like Valdosta, Jacksonville, Tallahassee, and Gainesville.
A strong low-level jet is going to move over the region. That extra wind energy means we could see an organized line of storms push through Saturday morning into the early evening. The main threats are going to be damaging wind gusts and isolated large hail. A quick spin-up tornado is also possible. If you have outdoor weekend plans in northern Florida, you need to have a way to get warnings.
Florida's Fire and Heat
Before those storms arrive on Saturday, the Florida peninsula is dealing with a totally different problem today. It is hot, dry, and windy.
A normal high for Miami this time of year is right around 87 degrees. Today, we are looking at near-record heat with temperatures pushing up into the mid-90s. Combine that heat with frequent wind gusts of 30 to 35 mph, and you get critical fire weather conditions. The local National Weather Service office in Melbourne is warning about a Red Flag threat because the vegetation is dry enough to catch and spread fire quickly.
If you are heading out to the Crypto.com Miami Grand Prix practices today, keep the sunscreen handy and drink plenty of water. You are going to feel that heat on the asphalt.
A Quick Look West
While the Southeast bakes, the Southern Plains are actually starting a cooling trend. Behind this front, Texas could see some record-low daily maximum temperatures. It is going to feel like a completely different season than what they had earlier this week.
And get this. Winter is not quite done with the mountains. The long-range outlooks are already highlighting a Day 5 winter storm threat for the Central High Plains. By Tuesday, we could see accumulating snow drop into the Rockies and impact places like Denver and Fort Collins. We will keep a close eye on that as the data rolls in.
Bottom Line: Keep the umbrella handy and expect travel delays along the Gulf Coast today. If you live in southern Georgia or northern Florida, have your weather alerts turned on for Saturday morning as that squall line moves through.
