An Enhanced Risk for severe weather targets Dallas-Fort Worth on Mother's Day. Prepare for 75 mph winds and 2-inch hail if you have outdoor or travel plans.

Mother's Day in DFW: Why Your Sunday Plans Need a Backup

Mother's Day in DFW: Why Your Sunday Plans Need a Backup

Get this, y'all. Tomorrow is Mother's Day. A lot of folks in North Texas have big plans. Maybe you scored tickets to see the Rangers host the Cubs in Arlington. Maybe you booked a patio table for brunch in Fort Worth. If your Sunday involves being outside in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, you need a backup plan right now.

The Storm Prediction Center just upgraded parts of North and Central Texas to an Enhanced Risk for severe weather tomorrow. That is a Level 3 out of 5. We have a cold front dropping south out of the Plains. It is going to hit an airmass loaded with moisture and heat. Meteorologists look at something called CAPE to measure storm energy. Tomorrow, those energy numbers are through the roof. When that front hits that unstable air, storms will explode.

The Real Threat: Giant Hail and Damaging Winds

The data shows a 30 percent chance of severe hail and damaging winds within 25 miles of any spot in the Enhanced Risk area. But you have to look at the hatched areas in the forecast to see the real danger. The hatched area means we are not just talking about regular severe weather. We are talking about hailstones over two inches across. That is hen-egg size. We are also looking at wind gusts topping 75 mph.

Globe Life Field has a roof. The Rangers game will play on. But getting from your car to the gates is a different story. A 75 mph wind gust will easily snap tree branches and knock out power. Two-inch hail will dent your hood and crack your windshield. If you are taking your mom out, do her a favor. Park in a parking garage. Eat at an indoor table. Keep your weather radio on and your phone charged.

Flash Flooding Continues on the Gulf Coast

Down on the Gulf Coast, things are also messy. Southern Louisiana and Mississippi have a Slight Risk for excessive rainfall tonight and tomorrow. Yesterday, places like Baton Rouge and New Orleans saw serious street flooding from training thunderstorms. The ground is completely waterlogged down there right now.

Any new rain will run straight off and cause flash flooding. If you are driving I-10 through Louisiana this weekend, do not drive into flooded roads. It is incredibly hard to judge water depth, especially at night.

Have a great Mother's Day, celebrate the moms in your life, and make sure your family knows what to do when the warnings get issued.
