A Pristine Preakness Weekend for the Mid-Atlantic, While California Cruises

Y'all, it has been a loud week across the middle of the country. Between zero-visibility dust storms in Texas and severe thunderstorms rattling the Midwest, a lot of folks have been stuck indoors. But if you look toward the coasts this weekend, the weather is putting on an absolute clinic. We are tracking a rare stretch of "Perfect" conditions locking in over the Mid-Atlantic, while California quietly builds a week-long streak of beautiful spring days.

The Mid-Atlantic Hits the "Perfect" Mark

Usually, hitting our highest nice weather category requires a flawless balance of temperature, humidity, and clear skies. This weekend, a strong area of high pressure shifting offshore is delivering exactly that to the coastal Mid-Atlantic and southern Northeast.

For Saturday and Sunday, we are seeing high temperatures right around 70 degrees with dewpoints comfortably in the upper 50s. That means zero mugginess. If you are heading out to the Preakness Stakes in Laurel, Maryland, today, or catching the Orioles and Nationals game in DC tonight, you could not ask for better grandstand weather.

The only minor catch? The UV index is running high at an 8.3 today. You will definitely want to pack the sunscreen if you are spending the afternoon outside.

California's Flawless Week

While the East Coast gets the weekend glory, the West Coast is playing the long game. Looking at our weekly streak data, California is completely dominating the top spots. Cities from Sacramento down to Los Angeles and San Diego are stringing together six to seven consecutive days in the "Beautiful" category.

By Sunday and Monday, Los Angeles and San Diego are sitting right at the top of our daily rankings. Highs will hover in the mid-70s with completely dry skies and light breezes. It is prime weather for a trailhead hike or a patio breakfast.

The Broader Pattern

Just keep in mind that as you push further inland from the West Coast toward the Desert Southwest, the air gets extremely dry, and fire danger is highly elevated across eastern New Mexico and the Texas Panhandle today and tomorrow.

If you live in the Central Plains or Midwest, your nice weather windows are going to be a bit tighter. We are tracking an active severe weather setup from Nebraska up through Minnesota this weekend, bringing threats of large hail and damaging winds. If you are in those zones, you will want to stay weather aware before planning any long outdoor activities.
