Tracking the best outdoor weather for Memorial Day weekend 2026. See why the Midwest, Great Lakes, and California are scoring perfect forecast ratings.

RHY Nice Weather Outlook Day 1

The Heartland Hits the Weather Jackpot for Memorial Day

Happy Sunday, y'all. We are right in the middle of a long holiday weekend, and the weather map is definitely picking favorites. If you are down South or out East, you are probably dodging some stubborn rain. But if you are in the Midwest or the Central Plains, you are looking at some of the best outdoor weather of the entire year.

Here is a look at who is getting the best grill and patio weather today and tomorrow.

Sunday: Flawless in the Central Plains

RHY Nice Weather Outlook Day 1

For Sunday, a massive dome of high pressure has parked itself right over the Central Plains. This is bringing us a massive zone of "Perfect" weather. Des Moines, Iowa, and Springfield, Missouri, are leading the pack today with scores of 92.0.

What does a Perfect score actually feel like? Try high temperatures around 78 degrees, crisp dewpoints in the mid 50s, and almost zero cloud cover. The winds are a gentle 7 to 8 mph. Whether you are heading to a trailhead, firing up the smoker, or catching a midday baseball game, you really cannot ask for a better setup.

Memorial Day: The Great Lakes and Midwest Shine

RHY Nice Weather Outlook Day 2

As we roll into Monday for Memorial Day, that bubble of fantastic weather shifts slightly east, bringing summer warmth to the Great Lakes and the Midwest.

Detroit, Michigan, and St. Louis, Missouri, are jumping right into the "Beautiful" category. If you are out in Detroit for the Movement Music Festival, you are getting treated to highs in the 70s and completely dry skies. St. Louis and Kansas City will be a touch warmer in the mid 80s, but the humidity is staying entirely manageable.

The short term forecast discussions for tomorrow note that while a stray popcorn shower could pop up over the Southern Plains, the vast majority of the central U.S. will stay completely dry for your holiday cookouts.

The Reliable West Coast Streak

We also have to give a quick nod to Southern California. If you are looking for consistency, places like Lancaster and Palmdale are currently riding a 14 day streak of "Nice" weather. California is dealing with a bit of the classic "May Gray" marine layer on the immediate coast each morning, but once that burns off, the coastal valleys are seeing comfortable highs in the 70s with a nice onshore breeze.

A Quick Heads Up

While the air feels great, the late May sun angle is no joke. The UV Index is hitting 7.5 across the Midwest and creeping up to 8.5 in places like Phoenix and Yuma. Make sure you are packing the sunscreen.

Also, keep in mind that the severe weather and heavy rain threats are still very active across the Gulf Coast and Ohio Valley today, which is keeping those regions strictly in the "Fair" category for outdoor comfort.
