Crisp Air Returns to the Great Lakes, While California Builds a Massive Streak

It has been a heavy week of weather for a lot of folks. With catastrophic flash flooding in Mississippi and severe storms rolling through Texas over the last couple of days, my thoughts are with everyone dealing with the rough side of the forecast.

But if you are out of the storm track, a highly comfortable airmass is settling over the northern half of the country. A sprawling area of high pressure is dragging crisp, dry air into the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley, setting up an absolutely pristine window for Thursday and Friday.

If you want to see exactly how your hometown scores, you can always check out our Nice Weather outlook page for the full map and specific city rankings.

Thursday and Friday Belong to the Midwest

By Thursday morning, a cold front will have swept the humidity right out of the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley. We are talking about dewpoints dropping beautifully into the 40s and 50s. When the air is that dry, 70 degrees feels exactly like 70 degrees.

Thursday looks spectacular for places like Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Green Bay, Wisconsin. Keep in mind that right along the Great Lakes shorelines, a northerly breeze will keep things noticeably cooler. In fact, if you are near Lake Michigan on Thursday, the National Weather Service is urging folks to stay off the piers and breakwalls due to choppy water and gusty winds.

By Friday, the wind calms down and the core of this perfect airmass shifts right over the Ohio Valley.

Indianapolis, Indiana, and Columbus, Ohio, are both looking at high temperatures right around 74 degrees with completely clear skies and zero chance of rain. If you have been waiting for the right evening to fire up the grill or grab dinner on a patio, Friday is your day. The UV Index will be running high during the afternoon, so grab the sunscreen if you are spending extended time outside.

California is Quietly Racking Up the Days

While the middle of the country rides the rollercoaster of spring weather fronts, Southern and Central California are just quietly putting together a massive streak of comfortable days.

Cities like Lancaster, Palmdale, and Azusa have officially hit 17 consecutive days in our "Nice" weather category. A highly amplified ridge of high pressure is parked over the West Coast, acting like a shield against major storm systems and keeping the air incredibly stable.

Over the next few days, Los Angeles and San Diego will continue to dominate the top of the charts with highs in the low 70s and very comfortable dewpoints. If you are catching the Phillies at the Padres tonight in San Diego, or heading out to the trails this weekend, the weather is going to be incredibly cooperative.

I hope y'all find some time to enjoy the fresh air this week. We will keep tracking the data and let you know where the map lights up next.
