Best Weather Today: Upper Midwest Beautiful, Summerfest Wins

Today's Beautiful-category high pressure delivers near-perfect scores across Minnesota and Wisconsin. Summerfest in Milwaukee gets ideal conditions before heat builds this weekend.

RHY Nice Weather Outlook Day 1

Summerfest Is Getting the Best Day of the Week, and Minnesota Is Getting Something Even Better

After a week that handed the Plains repeated rounds of flash flooding, swift water rescues, and tornado reports, today is the kind of Thursday that earns its own category. The data is clear on this one: if you're in the Upper Midwest or the central Appalachians, step outside.

The Numbers Behind Today

The Beautiful zone today runs from the northern Plains through the Upper Midwest and down into the central Appalachians, driven by a surface high centered over southeastern Saskatchewan that's been doing exactly what you want high pressure to do in late June. Dewpoints across the zone average near 57°F, winds are averaging just 8 mph with gusts barely reaching 14, and rain chances are sitting at 3%. That combination scores a 90.3 out of 100 zone-wide.

The top of the leaderboard today belongs to the Iron Range of Minnesota. Cook, MN scored 99.9. Chisholm, La Prairie, and Hill City all came in at 99.5. Hibbing and Grand Rapids hit 99.4. These are small towns on the edge of the Boundary Waters, and today they have the best outdoor weather in the lower 48 by a significant margin. If you're anywhere near the Quetico-Superior canoe country, this is a paddling day for the record books.

For the bigger cities, Madison and Rockford both scored 92. La Crosse came in at 92 as well. Rochester, MN hit 82 with a high near 74°F and a dewpoint of 58°F. Fargo reached 74°F with light winds and 47% cloud cover, which nudged its sky score down relative to the Iron Range but still landed it firmly in Beautiful territory.

Milwaukee is interesting. Lake Michigan is suppressing the high there to 66°F, which sounds cool for late June, but the dewpoint is only 60°F and wind is light. The UV comes in at 6.9 and AQI at 47, both clearing the Beautiful thresholds. Score: 82.

In the central Appalachians, Abingdon, Wytheville, and Marion in southwest Virginia all scored 92, with highs around 83°F, dewpoints near 58°F, and only 27% cloud cover. Bristol, TN is in the same ballpark, though UV there is running at 8.1, so sun protection is worth it if you're spending the afternoon outside.

What kept today from reaching Perfect zone-wide? Two things, and both by the thinnest of margins. The UV index averaged 7.1 across the zone (the Perfect gate requires 7.0 or below), and the AQI averaged 37 (gate requires 35 or below). Cloud cover also averaged 29%, just high enough to pull the sky sub-score to 89.2 when it needed to clear 92. Ely, MN technically clears all the individual Perfect gates on its own, scoring 92.0 with a UV of 6.5 and AQI of 33.

Summerfest Is Walking Into This

Summerfest Weekend 2 is running today in Milwaukee. The festival grounds sit right on the lakefront, which means the lake cooling is actually working in attendees' favor today. A high of 66°F with low humidity and light wind is about as comfortable as an outdoor music festival gets in late June. No rain in the forecast, no storms anywhere near the area, and the UV is staying manageable. The festival line, the beer garden, the walk from the parking structure, all of it is getting Beautiful-category air today.

For contrast, a country music festival is also running today in Cadott, Wisconsin. That's about 90 miles east-northeast of the Twin Cities and sitting well inside the Beautiful zone. Highs in the mid-70s, dewpoints in the upper 50s. If you're driving up for that, the weather is not your problem today.

Friday: Still Good, But the Clock Is Running

Friday holds onto Nice conditions across the central Great Lakes and Upper Midwest, anchored by Milwaukee, Madison, Green Bay, and Waterloo, Iowa. The zone score drops to 78.9 out of 100, held back almost entirely by cloud cover averaging 49%. The temperature, dewpoint, wind, and precipitation sub-scores are all strong, with dewpoints scoring 98.4 out of 100 and winds at 97. But half the sky will be occupied by clouds at any given time, and that alone keeps Friday from clearing into Beautiful.

Highs stay comfortable in the mid-70s across the corridor, dewpoints sit in the upper 50s to low 60s, and rain chances are minimal. It's a genuinely nice Friday afternoon, just not as sharp as today.

RHY Nice Weather Outlook Day 2

If you're in Milwaukee for the Chicago Cubs at Brewers game Friday night, the weather is fine. It's a partly cloudy evening, temperatures dropping into the low 60s by first pitch, light winds. Not Beautiful, but a solid ballpark night.

Saturday and Beyond: The Pattern Shifts

Saturday is where the window closes. The national ceiling drops to Fair, driven by winds averaging 16.7 mph with gusts to 24.4 mph across the best zones, and cloud cover that won't cooperate. The Great Lakes and West Coast are still the better places to be, but neither hits Nice.

Then the extended pattern gets genuinely concerning. The WPC and CPC are both flagging a building downstream ridge that will push widespread 90s across the eastern half of the country into next week. Heat index values well above 100°F are expected across the South and Gulf Coast. The CPC hazards outlook for July 2-8 has high risk of extreme heat across parts of the eastern U.S. That's not a nice weather story, and we'll cover it separately.

For now, though, today is the one. Check the Nice Weather outlook page if you want to see how your specific city scores across the full 7-day window. The California coast is holding a 17-day streak of Nice-or-better weather, which is its own story, and the Santa Barbara area leads the weekly rankings with a mean score of 83.4 across all seven days. But for a single day of outdoor comfort in the continental United States, the Iron Range of Minnesota is where you want to be right now.

Get outside while the air is this clean.
