Here is why it feels so good. Dewpoints have dropped into the low 50s across the zone, Albany at 52.3°F and Burlington at 51.4°F, which is about as crisp as July gets anywhere east of the Rockies. Highs are only reaching the high 70s (Boston 76.9°F, Springfield 77.5°F), rain chances are essentially zero, and wind is light. If you have a Red Sox game on the calendar tonight at Fenway, or you are just doing a patio dinner in Cambridge or a lake walk in Burlington, this is the day.
It is not quite flawless. UV is running 7.3 to 7.6, just over the threshold that would let this zone climb into the top public category, and lingering wildfire haze pushes AQI up to 43 in spots, enough to matter for the ceiling even though it is nowhere close to unhealthy. Sunscreen, not smoke masks, is today's actual concern here.
Out west, the same broad ridge pattern that is giving the Northeast its dry air is doing something different: it is just letting California's interior keep doing what it has been doing for over a month. At the same time, Santa Rosa and the North Bay hit that same ceiling from the opposite direction, riding dry interior air ahead of a building Southwest heatwave. Canadian wildfire smoke is settling over the Great Lakes and Midwest through Tuesday, capping otherwise warm, calm days well below their potential air quality alone would suggest.
