Some weeks the nice weather map tells one long story. This one tells three, in order: a squeezed, smoky pocket today, a genuinely great breakout tomorrow, and then a slow retreat toward the West Coast for the rest of the week as a big ridge takes over. If you're planning anything outdoors in the next seven days, the calendar matters more than usual.
Today: Good Air, Bad Neighbors
After yesterday's severe weather outbreak tore through the Ohio Valley and Northeast, the best comfort left standing today sits in a narrow band from El Paso and Las Cruces through Wichita, Springfield, and the Missouri Ozarks. That zone tops out at Nice, riding a scoured-clean sky, dewpoints in the upper 50s to mid 60s, and rain chances near zero. El Paso leads the pack at a score of 82, with Alamogordo actually posting the day's single highest city score at 92.
The catch is what's happening just to the northeast. Medium to heavy wildfire smoke is covering more than 60 percent of the Central Plains and Midwest corridor, and AirNow readings are spiking into the 140s in spots. That's an explicit hard cap in our scoring, so cities like Chicago and Tulsa, which otherwise have every underlying ingredient for a great day, get stuck at Fair instead of climbing higher. If you're in that smoke-affected stretch, it's worth checking local air quality before a long outdoor run, especially if you're sensitive to particulates.
Tonight's ballpark slate, including the Pirates visiting the Bronx and the Orioles in Boston, sits in that same leftover post-frontal zone. It's comfortable, but breezy and a touch humid, not the week's best sitting weather.
Tomorrow: The Week's Real Ceiling
Thursday is the day to build plans around. A fresh Canadian high scours the humidity out of a broad swath from the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley into the Mid-Atlantic and New England, and the result is Beautiful-tier air across an unusually large footprint. Indianapolis, Cincinnati, and Lexington all post individual scores of 92. Chicago, Milwaukee, and Boston aren't far behind.
What's remarkable is how close this gets to Perfect without actually touching it. Precipitation scores a flat 100, dewpoints drop into the mid 40s to low 50s, skies run just 14 percent cloud cover, and winds stay light at 8 mph. The only things holding it back are two hard gates: UV running around 7.4 to 7.8, above the ceiling Perfect requires, and AQI sitting in the mid 40s, also just over that stricter line. It's a reminder that even a flawless-feeling day can get capped by things you can't see or feel directly. Calmer winds also mean lower swim risk at Great Lakes beaches compared to earlier this week, and overnight lows dropping into the mid 40s to 50s make for genuinely great sleeping weather if you can leave a window open.

Friday: The Party Moves East and West at Once
Friday holds onto a similar Beautiful-tier setup, but it splits into two pockets: the Northeast again, and a second one across the Pacific Northwest and northern California behind a clearing marine push. That's good timing for Newport Folk Festival goers in Rhode Island, who should get dry skies, light wind, and comfortable dewpoints in the 50s for the outdoor stages.
One caveat out west: the same dry, clearing air that makes Portland and Santa Rosa so pleasant is also tightening the fire weather setup east of the Cascades, where forecasters are flagging critical conditions from strengthening afternoon winds and very low humidity. Great day for a hike in the western valleys, worth watching the fire weather headlines if you're closer to the eastern slopes.
The Back Half of the Week: The Ridge Wins
Starting Saturday, a broad upper ridge builds over the interior West and holds through the rest of the outlook period, and the whole country's ceiling drops to Nice for days 4 through 7. Nowhere gets back to Beautiful. The best air migrates west with it, landing across California, the Pacific Northwest, and the northern Rockies by Sunday and staying there into next week. Portland, Seattle, San Jose, Boise, and Spokane all keep showing up near the top of the daily leaderboard through Tuesday.
This lines up with something else in the data: a cluster of towns around the Bay Area and Sacramento Valley, places like Shasta, Walnut Grove, Gilroy, and Stockton, are sitting on 44-day streaks of Nice-or-better weather as of today. That's not a coincidence. It's the same ridge that's about to define the rest of this outlook, just showing its work over the past month and a half.
The tradeoff for that western consistency is heat. The heat-stress exclusion zone, meaning gridpoints too hot to even qualify for Decent, grows from 9 percent of the map on Day 4 to 27 percent by Day 6. Interior valleys like Redding and Porterville hit the heat floor even with bone-dry air, and CPC's extended outlook is flagging a real risk of Major to Extreme heat settling over the West, South, and Plains this weekend into next week. If your outdoor plans drift toward the desert Southwest or interior California valleys later this week, plan around the early morning hours.

Today's window is narrow and smoke-limited. Tomorrow is the best, cleanest, most widespread nice weather day of the week, especially if you're anywhere from Chicago to Boston. Friday keeps the good stuff going in two separate pockets, East and West.
