If you've been grilling on a patio in Sacramento or walking the kids to school in Stockton and thinking the weather's been unusually kind lately, you're not imagining it. According to our streak tracking, cities across the Bay Area, the Central Valley, and the Sierra foothills have gone 45 consecutive days without dropping below Fair on our comfort scale. Shasta, Walnut Grove, Shaver Lake, Gilroy, Sunnyside-Tahoe City, Sacramento, Oakland, Stockton, Modesto, Elk Grove, Hayward, Visalia, Roseville, Concord, Berkeley, Fairfield, Antioch, Arden-Arcade, San Leandro, and Citrus Heights are all sitting on that same 45-day run dating back to June 9. Several of them, including Sacramento, Stockton, Modesto, and Roseville, tagged an even better tier today.
Today's Ceiling Is Beautiful, and It's Well Earned
Today's map puts San Jose, Sacramento, Merced, and Stockton at Beautiful, with Stockton leading the country at a score of 92. Hollister isn't far behind. This is about as good as July gets in the Central Valley: 0 percent chance of rain, essentially clear skies, and dewpoints in the low 50s that keep the air feeling dry instead of sticky.
So why isn't this Perfect instead of Beautiful? Two things are holding it back, and neither one is really a weather problem in the traditional sense. UV readings across San Jose, Sacramento, and Merced are running 8.1 to 8.6, above the threshold the top tier requires. And heat stress is doing real work at the margins. Roughly 1 in 10 sampled locations in this broader zone, mostly around Sacramento and Madera, are running hot enough that they'd fail even the lowest comfort tier despite the gorgeous sky overhead. That's the trade-off of a Central Valley July: clean, dry, sunny air paired with afternoon heat that doesn't fully let go.
The Rogue Valley Is Along for the Ride
Zoom out to the weekly rankings and the pattern gets even more interesting. Our weekly top cities list is stacked with towns from Northern California into southern Oregon: Green, Winston, Willits, Lakeport, Tri-City, Myrtle Creek, Kelseyville, Brooktrails, Rogue River, Cave Junction, Canyonville, Gold Hill, Riddle, Williams, Ruch, and more, all posting a mean score of 86.3 across the week with their best day landing today. Medford and Ashland in Oregon's Rogue Valley are part of that same club.
The run doesn't stop after today, either. Saturday's forecast keeps the same corridor in the Beautiful tier, with Santa Rosa, Salem, Eugene, and Medford all projected at 92. Worth noting: Day 3 forecasts are capped at Beautiful by policy regardless of score, since our Perfect tier is reserved for the higher-confidence Day 1 and Day 2 windows. The atmosphere itself, precipitation at 100, sky cover at 5 percent, dewpoints near 50, would otherwise be knocking on Perfect's door.
The Catch: This Ridge Runs Hot at the Edges
Here's where I'd tell a friend to pace their outdoor plans. The same dry ridge producing all this clean, clear air also has a heat-stress problem simmering underneath it. Looking ahead through the extended period, Sacramento, Bakersfield, Stockton, Clovis, and Yakima all get knocked down to a floor score of 50 on multiple days even while their broader zone still qualifies as Nice. That's not a data glitch, it's heat: highs pushing past 100 in spots like Reedley and Sacramento's outskirts are enough to override an otherwise gorgeous sky.
The fire weather side of this is worth watching too. The Storm Prediction Center has already flagged a critical fire weather area for northeastern California, northwestern Nevada, and south-central into southeastern Oregon for Friday, driven by the same low humidity and building southwest winds that are giving everyone this dry, sunny stretch. If you're headed to the Rogue Valley or the Sierra foothills for a hike, it's worth checking Nice Weather outlook page for the day-of numbers, since AQI and visibility can shift fast if a fire ignites nearby.
Meanwhile, a Second Nice Pocket Sets Up in the East
While the West Coast owns this stretch, a fresh, dry surface high is also building from the Great Lakes into the interior Northeast. Philadelphia posted a Nice score of 77.8 today with dewpoints down near 59, and that same high pressure axis keeps expanding Friday, pushing places like Jamestown, New York into the Beautiful tier at a score of 92. That's good timing for baseball fans: the Yankees and Phillies play Friday night in Philadelphia, and the Cubs and Pirates play in Pittsburgh, both under the kind of dry, light-wind conditions that make for an easy night at the ballpark.
Elsewhere, Keep an Eye on the Tropics and the Plains
This is a genuinely good stretch for a big chunk of the country, but it's not a good stretch everywhere. A Moderate Risk for excessive rainfall sits over southeastern Virginia and eastern North Carolina today as a stalled front interacts with lingering tropical moisture from what's left of Bertha. Out on the High Plains, a Slight Risk for severe thunderstorms covers western Kansas, with damaging wind gusts and large hail possible this afternoon and evening. If your outdoor plans take you through either of those zones, that's the day to have a backup indoors.
For everyone riding this Western stretch, though, today's the day to get outside. Just maybe schedule the trailhead for morning instead of 3 PM.
