Northern New England and Oregon's Rogue Valley hit Beautiful on today's nice weather scale, with dry air and clear skies before the pattern shifts west.
Bangor and the Rogue Valley Are Having the Best Weather Day in America Today
Most of the country is dealing with something today. Flash flood risk is stacking up over the Carolinas, monsoon storms are firing across the Southwest, and a slow-moving front is still wringing out rain from yesterday's remnants of Tropical Storm Bertha. But tucked away from all of that, two small, unglamorous corners of the map are having a genuinely great day: northern New England and the interior valleys of western Oregon.
Our nice weather scoring tops out at Beautiful today, and Bangor, Maine and Grants Pass, Oregon are both sitting right at the ceiling with scores of 92. Roseburg, Oregon and Eugene aren't far behind. This isn't a fluke reading. A broad surface high is parked over both regions, squeezing out dewpoints in the low 50s, delivering close to zero percent chance of rain, and keeping skies at just 12 percent cloud cover on average. That's the kind of air mass that makes late July feel like early June.
What's actually driving the good air
The dryness is the star here. Precipitable water values over central Pennsylvania are described as about as low as they get for this time of year, and that dry signature stretches from the Mid-Atlantic clear up into the Great Lakes and Northeast. Vermont's relative humidity is dropping to 25 to 30 percent overnight, which sets up excellent radiational cooling once the sun goes down. If you're grabbing a patio breakfast in Bangor or Presque Isle this morning, expect that rare feeling of dry, clean air on your skin instead of the usual late-July stickiness.
Out west, Roseburg is bone dry with 0 percent cloud cover, and the whole Willamette Valley corridor down through the Rogue Valley is riding the same offshore-leaning high. Highs near 79 degrees in Eugene and 91 in Grants Pass sound like a spread, but both feel comfortable given how little moisture is in the air.
The one thing keeping both zones from climbing higher than Beautiful is wind, averaging near 10 mph with gusts into the high teens, plus a touch of UV in the 7.4 to 7.9 range. Sunscreen is still a good idea if you're out most of the afternoon, especially in the Rogue Valley where the fire weather desk has already flagged critical conditions today with gusty southwest winds and single-digit humidity. It's a beautiful day to be outside, just not a day to be careless with anything that could spark.
The near-miss zone is bigger than the winning one
Honestly, the most interesting number today might be the Nice-tier zone just below Beautiful, covering the Upper Midwest, the Mid-Atlantic fringe, and Pacific coast valleys. It scored 80.8, just 1.2 points off the top tier, the closest miss on the entire board. Philadelphia is the textbook example: 82.7 degree high, dewpoint down to 59.6, genuinely pleasant numbers, but medium smoke aloft is inflating the effective air quality reading enough to cap the city below Beautiful. Milwaukee has a similar story with cleaner surface air but enough cloud cover to hold it back. If that haze thins out even a little, this whole swath jumps a tier.
Who should actually change plans today
If you're near Fenway tonight for the Blue Jays and Red Sox, or in Philadelphia for the Yankees and Phillies, you're in decent shape, comfortable temperatures and low humidity, just watch for a little extra sky haze. Baltimore, DC, and Queens all fall into similar territory for tonight's games.
Further south and west, it's a different story. Fort Worth is pushing a heat index near 98 degrees today, and Los Angeles is dealing with 15 mph wind and a UV index of 8.5, worth a hat and sunscreen if you're out midday. Neither city is bad, they're just not today's headliner.
A short window before the pattern shifts
This particular setup, New England and the Pacific Northwest sharing the day's best air, is basically a one-day event. Saturday's pattern already starts pulling the best scores toward California's Central Valley and southern Oregon, part of the same 45-day stretch of good weather that cities like Stockton, Sacramento, and Livermore have been riding since early June. Tomorrow you'll see San Jose, Medford, and the interior valleys of northern California take over the top of the leaderboard, while the Northeast slides down into a still-pleasant but slightly warmer Nice tier.
