The Pacific Northwest Keeps Knocking on Perfect's Door, and Seafair Weekend Gets the Beautiful Version Instead

Everywhere Else Is a Heat and Haze Story
Step outside those two pockets and the country's weather picture looks very different. Wildfire smoke is layered on top of building heat across the Central Plains and Midwest, with CAMS air quality forecasts spiking to 282 and AirNow readings near 179 in spots today. Combined with afternoon heat indices approaching 111°F, that corridor is stuck at Fair or Decent no matter how dry the air feels. The Southwest and Central Valley are baking too, with highs past 100°F in places like Phoenix and Fresno, and the extended outlook flags a renewed extreme heat risk building across California, the Great Basin, and the Rockies into next week.
A quick note for the weekend if you're chasing something better: Saturday brings a narrow but genuinely Beautiful corridor from eastern Nebraska into western Minnesota, riding in behind this week's cold front, with Sioux City and Grand Island posting some of the best scores anywhere in the country. That same stretch of the Plains is also under a Slight Risk for severe thunderstorm gusts today per the Storm Prediction Center, so the clean, calm air arrives right on the heels of some noisy weather, not before it.
Looking Ahead
The extended discussion keeps the High Plains and Pacific Northwest in the Nice tier through about Day 6, with that best-category zone gradually eroding as humidity creeps in, before the pattern flips by Day 7 and the best air shifts back toward coastal Southern California, Los Angeles and San Diego both climb into the Nice tier as a fresh cold front works into the northern tier of the country.
