Y'all, today's map has a split personality, and honestly it's a good one. Two very different corners of the country are having the best weather in America right now for two very different reasons, and neither one involves Perfect. That distinction goes to tomorrow, and it's headed to a stretch of Minnesota you've probably never had a reason to look up.
Friday: Beautiful in Two Places at Once
Today's outlook zeroes in on a Beautiful-tier band anchored in the Pacific Northwest lowlands and, surprisingly, the interior Northeast. That zone is scoring 90.2 out of 100, just 1.8 points from Perfect, on the strength of essentially flawless precipitation and sky sub-scores and highs sitting near a very livable 78°F. Portland and Eugene are both posting a 92, and if you're at Seafair Weekend Festival in Seattle today, you're standing in some of the best air in the country. Same story if you've got a spot at Musikfest in Bethlehem, PA, or you're wandering the Lehigh Valley more broadly. Allentown and Scranton both post the same 92 score, riding low dewpoints in the mid-50s and skies at just 9 percent cloud cover.

The catch, and it's a small one, is wind and temperature both sitting in the mid-90s on their sub-scores rather than pegged at 100. A couple mph less breeze or a degree or two cooler would have tipped this into Perfect territory today. It didn't, and that's fine. Beautiful with almost no asterisks is still a gift on the last day of July.
Elsewhere the story is heat and haze. Wildfire smoke is dragging air quality down across the Plains and Midwest, with effective AQI running into the high 60s and surface smoke spiking over 200 micrograms per cubic meter in spots, while building high pressure over the Southwest is pushing heat indices past 100°F. That combination is capping wide stretches of the country at Fair or Decent even where rain isn't a factor at all.
Saturday: The Real Ceiling Gets Reached, and It's Not Where You'd Guess
Here's the fun part. Tomorrow's outlook actually reaches Perfect, and it's tucked into a narrow strip of far northern Minnesota along the Canadian border, towns like Roseau, Baudette, Warroad, Red Lake, and Littlefork. This zone scores 98.5, which is about as close to the top of the scale as this outlook gets. Every sub-score is pegged at or near 100: precipitation and sky are both a flat 100, heat stress is a clean 100, and dewpoints sit in the refreshing 59 to 60°F range. Highs run upper 70s to low 80s under nearly cloudless skies with winds around 8 to 10 mph. Baudette checks in at a 99.5. If you've got any flexibility this weekend and a fondness for quiet lake country, this is genuinely the nicest square of the country on the map.

A broader Beautiful zone wraps around it across the eastern Dakotas into Nebraska and Minnesota, scoring 90.4 and just missing Perfect on UV and a touch of lingering smoke rather than anything about the temperature or wind. Fargo, Grand Island, and Kearney all land in the high 80s and low 90s for their individual scores. Meanwhile Minneapolis and Philadelphia both drop to Fair, and the Northeast in general cools off from today's high mark as a cold front works through.
One caveat worth flagging if you're headed toward eastern Washington this weekend instead: the Storm Prediction Center has an Extremely Critical fire weather designation up for the Columbia Basin on Saturday, with sustained 20 to 30 mph winds, gusts over 45 mph, and relative humidity down to 15 to 20 percent near ongoing large wildfires. Tri-Cities and Spokane still show up as comfortable Nice-tier towns on our maps for the days ahead, and comfort-wise they'll feel great, but that's a genuinely dangerous fire environment layered right on top of pleasant-feeling air. The Quiet Overachievers of the Week
Zoom out to the full seven-day picture and a cluster of small towns has been running away with it. Hopland and Laytonville in California's wine country, and Drain, Yoncalla, and Cottage Grove down in Oregon's Umpqua Valley, have posted Nice-or-better conditions every single day this week, peaking at a 92 on today's map. None of them will ever trend on their own, but if you're weighing a weekend trip through the Pacific Northwest backroads, that's about as reliable a bet as this outlook makes all week.
There's also a quieter streak story running through California's Central Valley. Sacramento, Stockton, Modesto, and a long list of neighbors have now strung together 53 straight days clearing our Nice threshold, which says less about any one spectacular day and more about a summer pattern that's kept smoke and severe weather largely out of that corridor even as heat has stuck around.
