The one asterisk is air quality, sitting in the 60s across this zone. It's not bad enough to ruin a festival, but it's exactly what's keeping this whole corridor at Nice instead of climbing to Beautiful, even though every other ingredient (temperature, wind, dewpoint, sky) already clears that bar.
That AQI ceiling turns out to be the theme of the whole weekend, just in two different places.
Saturday: the Dakotas and Minnesota knock on the door
A cold front sweeping through today drags genuinely beautiful air into the northern Plains and Upper Midwest for Saturday. Minneapolis and Minot both score a 92.0, with La Crosse (91.2), Devils Lake, and a string of North Dakota towns right there with them. Highs run a comfortable 80 degrees, dewpoints sit in the mid-50s, winds stay light at under 10 mph, and cloud cover barely cracks 20 percent. Every single sub-score in this zone, temperature, dewpoint, precipitation, sky, wind, heat stress, already clears the bar the next tier up would require. The only thing standing between this zone and Perfect is air quality: 41 versus the strict 35-or-under cutoff that tier demands. That's about as close as it gets. If you're planning a lake day, a patio dinner, or just a long walk around the Chain of Lakes, Saturday is the day to do it. Bismarck is the outlier in an otherwise flawless zone, running a touch warmer and breezier and landing closer to Nice-caliber numbers even inside the same box.
Sunday: the baton passes to the Willamette Valley
By Sunday, the best air in the country shifts to western Oregon. Eugene and Roseburg both hit 92.0, Salem sits at 81.7, and the zone-wide average of 89.5 is the single best score anywhere in the seven-day outlook. Dewpoints near 50 degrees, essentially zero rain chance, and wind that barely registers make this about as good as August gets in the Pacific Northwest. Technically, this day can't reach Perfect no matter what the numbers say, since the outlook caps that top tier to Days 1 and 2 only. But even setting that rule aside, a UV index of 7.3 and an AQI of 46 both miss the stricter gates Perfect would require. Coastal spots like Florence and Lincoln City run a little cooler and windier, so the valley itself, think Eugene, Corvallis, Salem, is the better bet for a vineyard visit or a slow Sunday hike. Seattle and Portland sit just one notch down at Nice, and it's the same story again: every sub-score already clears the next tier's bar except air quality, which is running around 55 against a 50 threshold from lingering wildfire haze.

That's the kind of steady, unglamorous consistency that doesn't always make headlines but makes for a genuinely great week to be outside.
