Haze Is Today's Real Ceiling, Not Heat: A Beautiful Ribbon From El Paso to Little League World Series Weather
Some days the nice weather map gets stopped by heat. Some days it's rain. Today it's neither. Tuesday's Beautiful stretch runs from the desert Southwest clear through the Ohio Valley into Pennsylvania, and on paper it's about as clean a setup as you'll see all month: light wind, dry air, barely any rain chance anywhere in the footprint. The thing holding it back from the top tier isn't the atmosphere behaving badly. It's haze.
The corridor: El Paso to Williamsport
The day's best zone runs roughly from El Paso and Las Cruces northeastward through Flagstaff into Cincinnati and Pittsburgh, and it keeps going into central Pennsylvania, catching Altoona, Wilkes-Barre, State College, and Williamsport along the way. That last one matters this week specifically: Williamsport hosts the Little League World Series, which gets underway Wednesday, and today's forecast there lands right at a 92.0 score, Beautiful conditions, the best of any day this week for that city.
Cincinnati and Pittsburgh are the standouts in the numbers, both scoring 92.0 with highs in the upper 70s to low 80s and dewpoints in the low 60s, basically ideal ballpark weather for tonight's Tigers-Pirates and Giants-Guardians games. El Paso and Las Cruces run warmer, into the low 90s, but the desert's dry air (dewpoints in the low 50s) keeps things comfortable by August standards.
Here's the catch. Every core number in this zone, precipitation, sky, wind, dewpoint, already clears the bar for Perfect. What doesn't clear it is UV, sitting at 8.0, and air quality, with CAMS AQI readings pushing into the 50s in spots. Perfect requires UV at or below 7 and AQI at or below 35. Lingering wildfire smoke and general haze are the actual gatekeepers today, not the weather most people would notice standing outside. Bring sunscreen, and if you're sensitive to air quality, keep an eye on afternoon readings even on a day that otherwise feels ideal.
Just outside that top tier, a broader Nice-to-Beautiful swath covers Indianapolis, Syracuse, and pockets of the central Plains, again held back mainly by an AQI reading that's just a few points too high rather than any flaw in temperature or wind. By Wednesday the best air relocates to the western Great Lakes. Once again, every underlying number (temperature, dewpoint, sky, wind, heat stress) already scores in the mid-90s or better. Once again, it's AQI, sitting near 46, that keeps the zone out of Perfect.
A wide Nice band stretches from the Ohio Valley through the Mid-Atlantic and into the Intermountain West, catching Washington DC, Salt Lake City, Seattle, and Chattanooga, with Salt Lake standing out on a bone-dry 39°F dewpoint despite an 88°F high. UV readings in the high 6s to upper 7s across this zone are worth a sun-hat note even where the rest of the day feels effortless.
Thursday nudges the best conditions again, this time splitting between western Michigan (Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo) and western Oregon (Salem, Eugene), both reaching Beautiful on the strength of dry air and light wind, while a separate Nice pocket holds over the central High Plains where dewpoints in the upper 40s keep highs near 90°F feeling manageable. Looking toward the weekend: Pittsburgh gets a second act
Friday, the Jets and Steelers meet in Pittsburgh for preseason football, and the nice weather data has good news, tempered by a caveat. Pittsburgh sits inside Day 4's best available zone, a Great Lakes and Ohio Valley footprint that also includes Cleveland, Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, and Albany, scoring 80.1, the strongest showing of the whole four-day stretch from Friday through Monday. Dewpoint and rain chances are both essentially maxed out in that zone. Pittsburgh's individual score comes in a bit lower, 71.4, dragged mainly by stickier humidity (dewpoint near 65°F) rather than temperature, so plan for a warm, close-feeling evening rather than a crisp one.

Worth a nod: a cluster of small Willamette Valley towns in Oregon, Halsey, Corvallis, Albany, Lebanon, Monmouth, along with Klamath Falls and Las Cruces, are stacking up as the most reliably pleasant spots on the whole seven-day map, each logging Nice-or-better conditions every single day and topping out with Thursday's Beautiful reading. If you're weighing a late-summer trip with no bad-weather days built in, that stretch of Oregon is the safer bet than almost anywhere else in the country right now.
And if you're near Sacramento, Oakland, or the wider Bay Area and Central Valley, you're sitting on a 71-day streak of Nice-or-better conditions that hasn't broken all summer, a reminder that while the East is stuck cycling through smoke and storms, some corners of the map have just been quietly pleasant for over two months straight.
Elsewhere, the SPC still has a Slight Risk of severe storms grinding across the central Plains and lower Missouri Valley today and into the Ozarks Wednesday, completely separate from the nice-weather zones above.
