The Best Scores of the Whole Week Are Sitting in Small-Town Oregon Today
Y'all, sometimes the map hands you a headline you don't have to squint at. Buried in today's data is a run of tiny river valley towns in southwestern Oregon, places like Tri-City, Canyonville, Myrtle Creek, and Riddle, scoring 96 to 98.7 out of 100. Those aren't just today's best numbers. They're the best numbers anywhere in the entire seven-day outlook we're tracking. Nothing later in the week, in any region, beats what's happening right now along the South Umpqua and Rogue valleys.
Rogue Valley and the Umpqua Towns Are Having a Moment
Tri-City posted a 98.7. Canyonville hit 98.5. Myrtle Creek came in at 98.2, Riddle at 98.1, Winston at 98.0, with Green, Lookingglass, New Hope, Glendale, and Melrose all sitting in the 96 to 97 range. These are small towns, most under 4,000 people, tucked into the hill country between Grants Pass and Roseburg. High pressure has scoured the air down to genuinely dry, clean conditions there: light wind, minimal cloud cover, and dewpoints running well below anything that would make an August afternoon feel sticky. Medford and Grants Pass, the bigger names nearby, are riding the same air at a still-excellent 92.
Here's the interesting part. Even a 98.7 lands in the Beautiful category rather than Perfect. That's not a typo or an undersell. Perfect requires air quality readings clean enough to clear a stricter gate than Beautiful does, and nowhere in the country today, not even in this stretch of Oregon, does the air get quite that clean. Today's forecast-day rule technically allows a Perfect score to exist, but the atmosphere itself didn't deliver one anywhere. Beautiful is the real ceiling, and these Oregon towns are sitting right at the top of it.
Worth knowing if you're anywhere near that corridor today: a Critical fire weather designation is up several hundred miles northeast, across far northeastern California, northwestern Nevada, and southeastern Oregon. The Rest of the Country's Best Air Is Walking East
Outside Oregon, today's other standout zone sits across the Dakotas, Wisconsin, and into the Ozarks. Sioux Falls, Green Bay, Eau Claire, Oshkosh, and Wausau are all posting 91.9 to 92, a genuinely Beautiful day with highs in the upper 70s to low 80s and dewpoints in the mid-to-upper 50s. Minneapolis, right next door, checks in a notch behind at 81.3, a solidly Nice day, which matters if you're headed to the Minnesota State Fair in Falcon Heights this week. Tomorrow, Minneapolis jumps to 92 and a full Beautiful rating as the same high pressure system slides east. If your fairgrounds visit has any flexibility built in, tomorrow is the better day to go.
That same system keeps moving. Friday it centers on the central Great Lakes and Ohio Valley, with Indianapolis, Buffalo, Fort Wayne, Grand Rapids, and Warren, Michigan all hitting 92. Buffalo holds that Beautiful rating into Saturday too, joined by Rochester, Syracuse, and Albany, plus Springfield, Massachusetts, as the air pushes into interior New England. That's good timing for the tail end of the Great New York State Fair up in Syracuse, which gets progressively better weather as the weekend arrives rather than worse.
Saturday's Beautiful zone also reaches into Nashville and the broader Ohio Valley, which is worth flagging if you're headed to Beerfest at the Kentucky State Fair in Louisville that afternoon. Louisville sits close enough to that same air mass that the beer garden weather should be pleasant, even if Louisville's own numbers likely trail Nashville's a touch. Meet the Town Actually Named Nice, and Its Very Long Streak
Here's a fun one buried in the weekly rankings. There's a real town in Lake County, California, called Nice. Population just over 2,700, sitting on the shore of Clear Lake north of Napa. It's had a legitimately strong week, averaging 82 across all seven days, with its best day landing Saturday at a full 92, right alongside neighbors Kelseyville, Clearlake Oaks, Cobb, and Soda Bay. Wine country regulars Santa Rosa and Ukiah are riding the same stretch.
Zoom out a bit farther south and there's an even bigger streak worth noting. Sacramento, Oakland, Stockton, Berkeley, Napa, and more than a dozen other Central Valley and Bay Area cities have not dropped below Nice on a single day since June 9, the very start of the period this dataset tracks. That's 80 straight days. It doesn't mean the air has been flawless the entire summer, but it does mean the baseline comfort level out there has been remarkably steady for two and a half months running.
