The Great Lakes and Northeast Get Back-to-Back Beautiful Days Before the Heat Comes Back
Y'all, some weeks the map gives you one great day and calls it good. This week it's handing the Great Lakes and interior Northeast two in a row, and then, because nothing stays free forever, taking most of it back for the rest of the country by the time Labor Day week gets going.
Friday: Toledo, Buffalo, and Syracuse Own the Day
Today's best air sits in a narrow band running from northern Ohio through interior New York, with a second little pocket way out in the Rogue Valley of Oregon. That Great Lakes/Northeast zone is scoring 89.4 out of 100, the high point of the whole day, and it lands in the Beautiful category. Toledo is running 78°F with a 59°F dew point and just 7% cloud cover. Medford, Oregon is even drier at 83°F with a 46°F dew point and zero clouds. Utica, Buffalo, and Syracuse run cooler, in the upper 60s to low 70s, with light 9 to 10 mph winds and dew points in the upper 50s to low 60s.
Here's the interesting part: nearly every sub-score in that zone already clears the bar for Perfect, the top category on the current Nice Weather scale. Precipitation, heat stress, sky, and wind are all in the 90s. The one thing standing in the way is air quality, sitting around 40 when Perfect requires 35 or cleaner. A little more haze clearance and this would be the best day of the summer in that corridor. Instead it's Beautiful, which honestly is still a very good problem to have if you're at the Great New York State Fair grounds in Syracuse this weekend, or grabbing a lakefront patio table in Buffalo.
Contrast that with tonight's Bengals-Eagles preseason kickoff in Philadelphia, sitting under a Slight Risk for excessive rainfall as a stalled front keeps wringing out heavy showers across the Mid-Atlantic. Same evening, same general region of the country, wildly different experience depending on which side of that front you're standing on.
Saturday: The Same Air Mass Slides East, and Boston Takes the Crown
The high pressure responsible for Friday's comfort does not go anywhere, it just walks east. By Saturday the Beautiful zone expands to cover New England and pushes the Great Lakes warmth up a notch too, scoring 91.3, just 0.7 points and one cleaner AQI reading away from Perfect. Boston and South Boston post highs near 75°F with 58°F dew points and light winds around 12 mph. Cleveland and Clearlake, California run a touch warmer, into the low 80s, but stay dry enough to score just as well. Buffalo, Rochester, Bridgeport, Manchester, Erie, and Syracuse all land individual scores of 92, tied for the best number anywhere in the outlook.
Once again, air quality near 40 is the only thing keeping this zone out of Perfect territory. Every other input, temperature, dew point, sky, wind, precipitation, is elite. If you've got a Saturday outdoor plan anywhere from Cleveland to Boston, this is close to as good as late-August weather gets in this part of the country.
Sunday the Torch Passes West
By Sunday the ceiling moves again, this time out to southern Oregon and northern California, where Portland, Salem, Medford, and Bend all post scores around 92 and the zone as a whole comes in at 88.6. Day 3 outlooks are capped at Beautiful by policy regardless of raw score, and the zone's AQI of 43 would have kept it out of Perfect anyway. One thing worth flagging if you're heading into that same stretch of Oregon and northern California this weekend: the Storm Prediction Center's fire weather desk has an elevated concern out for southeast Oregon into the Sacramento Valley and northwest Montana today, with 15 to 20 mph winds and afternoon humidity down in the 10 to 20% range on already dry fuels. The same dry, clear air that makes for gorgeous hiking weather also makes for touchy fire conditions, so it's worth checking local burn restrictions before any campfire plans.
Meanwhile, Sacramento Hasn't Had a Bad Day Since June
Worth a mention while we're out west: Sacramento, Oakland, Stockton, Berkeley, Napa, and a long list of other Bay Area and Central Valley cities are riding live streaks of 81 straight days at Nice-or-better, stretching back to June 9. That's not a fluke of today's map, that's a whole summer of dry, mild marine-influenced air just doing its job day after day. If you want the single most reliable nice-weather bet in the country right now, it's not any one city in this article, it's that entire Northern California corridor.
Enjoy It, Because the Rest of Next Week Looks Rough
Here's the catch. The four-day discussion covering Days 4 through 7 is blunt about it: a transient ridge gives the Intermountain West a brief Nice pocket on Day 4, but by Day 5 no zone in the entire outlook reaches Nice, everything caps out at Fair. A small Nice window reopens over the desert Southwest near El Paso on Day 6, then closes again by Day 7, which posts the widest severe-gust footprint and worst sky scores of the stretch. The WPC's extended discussion backs this up directly, warning that an intensifying late-summer heat wave will spread dangerous heat from the central and southern Plains into the Midwest, Southeast, and Deep South through next week, while the Southwest and Rockies keep dealing with daily monsoon storms and flash flood risk.
So if you're weighing a weekend outdoors versus pushing it to the middle of next week, the data says go now. Friday and Saturday in the Great Lakes and Northeast, or this weekend in the Pacific Northwest and northern California, are about as good as this outlook gets for a while.
