Y'all, today's map has a real "pick your region" quality to it, and then it keeps moving. The best weather in the country is going to change addresses three times between now and Monday, which makes this less of a single nice day and more of a relay race with a baton getting passed west.
Today: Fall Sneaks Into the Northeast
If you're anywhere near Syracuse, Allentown, or Scranton this afternoon, you're getting the best air of the day. A dry, subsiding high has settled over northern New England, upstate New York, and Pennsylvania, and it's brought genuinely fall-like conditions in the last week of August. Syracuse is sitting at 74°F with a 55.5°F dew point and light 8 mph wind, good enough for a full Beautiful score of 92. That's happy timing for the Great New York State Fair, which has been running in Syracuse since Tuesday and gets one of its nicest days yet. Allentown (74.9°F, 53.4°F dew point) and Scranton match that same 92, which means the Little League World Series crowd wrapping up in nearby Williamsport is also getting comfortable, low-humidity air to close things out.
Across the country, northern California is running its own version of the same pattern. Redding hits 92 with an 89.5°F high offset by a bone-dry 42.9°F dew point, and if you're headed to the Barbera Festival in Folsom today, expect warm sun and light wind rather than anything oppressive. Santa Rosa also lands in the Beautiful bucket, though breezier wind (15 mph, gusting to 22) knocks its individual score down a bit compared to its Wine Country neighbors.
The one real catch today sits in the Mid-Atlantic. Philadelphia and the broader I-95 corridor score a comfortable 82, but they're held out of Beautiful by air quality, not weather. Effective AQI runs around 55 there, just over the 50 threshold Beautiful requires, even though every other number, temperature, wind, sky, is textbook. If you're at the Beerfest at the Kentucky State Fair in Louisville this afternoon, know you're in Nice territory too, just warmer and muggier (88.6°F, 62.7°F dew point) than the crisp air up north.
Tomorrow: The Baton Passes to California's Valley
Sunday is where this gets interesting. The Northeast's dry air mass moves out, and the day's best conditions shift entirely to interior California, specifically the Sacramento-Modesto-Santa Rosa-Madera-Willits corridor. That zone scores a 90, with a flat 2% cloud cover and a bone-dry 48.5°F average dew point. Modesto and Willits both hit individual 92s. The only thing keeping this pocket out of Perfect is a technicality: Perfect requires UV at or below 7 and AQI at or below 35, and this zone runs UV 7.2 with AQI in the mid-40s. In other words, the numbers are basically there, but the same clear skies driving the comfort are also pushing sun exposure up a notch, so sunscreen and shade breaks still matter if you're out all day.
A quieter but real story is unfolding underneath this same ridge. Sacramento, Napa, Stockton, Oakland, Berkeley, and dozens of other Central Valley and North Bay towns are sitting on an 82-day streak of Nice-or-better scores dating back to June 9, and it's still live heading into Sunday. Williams and Clearlake Oaks currently top our weekly rankings with a perfect 7-for-7 run this week. This isn't a one-day fluke, it's a genuinely long stretch of pleasant, low-humidity, low-smoke weather for a part of the state that spends plenty of summers under haze and heat advisories instead.
Worth flagging if you've got friends heading to Burning Man in the Black Rock Desert, which kicks off Sunday: that part of Nevada sits outside this nice pocket, in the Great Basin zone where WPC has flagged a slight risk of excessive rainfall and SPC has a severe thunderstorm risk out ahead of a Pacific system. Dust, heat, and pop-up storms are a more realistic bet out there than the calm, dry air California's valley towns are enjoying.
Monday: Oregon Gets Its Turn
By Monday, the ridge shifts again, and interior western Oregon and southwest Washington pick up the baton with a 90.3 score, Eugene and Grants Pass both landing near the top with dry mid-40s dew points and wind under 10 mph. This is genuinely good hiking and patio weather; the only soft spots are sky condition (about 28% cloud cover) and a small heat-stress ding that's easy to shrug off with highs around 83°F. Grants Pass, The Dalles, and Heppner all post clean 92s. A broad Nice-tier band covers the central Rockies and Intermountain West behind the same system, though wind and haze shave a few points off spots like Spokane and San Diego.
Then the Window Starts Closing
Here's the part worth planning around if you've got Labor Day travel on the calendar. Tuesday and Wednesday, the nice pocket survives, but it shrinks and drifts south, holding on across the Bay Area, Sacramento Valley, and eventually stretching into Albuquerque and Santa Fe as Southwest ridging takes over. By Thursday and Friday, though, our data shows no zone in the entire country reaching better than Fair. That tracks with what WPC's extended discussion is already warning about: dangerous heat expanding from the central and southern Plains into the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast next week, plus a strong Pacific storm and possible atmospheric river aimed at the Pacific Northwest, and rounds of severe weather riding the boundary between them into the Great Lakes and Northeast. Confidence on the exact placement six and seven days out is lower than it is for tomorrow or Monday, but the broad signal, this window closing hard, is consistent enough to take seriously if you're picking a weekend to travel.
