Sacramento to Grants Pass: The Country's Best Air Is Riding an 83-Day Streak
Y'all, if you want the best sky in the country today, point yourself toward the Central Valley or interior Oregon. A dry, post-frontal high pressure system has settled over the West, and it's produced the kind of clean, low-humidity, mostly-sunny stretch that Sacramento has now been enjoying for 83 straight days.
Today's Winner: The Central Valley to Grants Pass Corridor
Sacramento, Santa Rosa, and Merced are all sitting at a score of 92.0 today, the Beautiful tier, with Grants Pass, Oregon matching that same 92.0. Stockton (81.9), Albany, Oregon (82.0), and Oregon City (82.0) round out the top of the list, with Eugene trailing the pack at 72.0 mainly because of extra cloud cover rather than any real problem with the air itself.
The numbers behind that zone are almost boringly good: average highs near 82°F, lows near 54°F, dewpoints around 48°F, cloud cover averaging just 12%, and rain chances near zero. Winds stay light, around 10 mph with gusts under 16.
So why isn't this Perfect instead of Beautiful? Three small things. The temperature sub-score comes in at 91.1, just under the 92 needed to clear the gate. UV runs 7.1 to 7.5, above the ceiling that tier requires. And the average AQI of 44, while clean enough to clear the Beautiful cap of 50, doesn't sneak under the tighter Perfect cap of 35. It's the weather equivalent of missing a green light by half a second. Still, if you're planning a patio breakfast, a Sacramento River bike ride, or a Sunday hike around Grants Pass, none of that will register. Just know the UV clock runs fast at midday, so plan shade breaks if you're out past noon.
That streak, by the way, isn't just Sacramento's. Walnut Grove, Elk Grove, Stockton, Fairfield, Manteca, Rancho Cordova, Citrus Heights, and Arden-Arcade all touched the Beautiful tier again today, and cities like Oakland, Hayward, Berkeley, Concord, Napa, Alameda, and Pleasanton have been riding the same 83-day run of Fair-or-better conditions without a break since early June. That's the kind of stretch that makes weekend plans easy to make in advance.
Monday's Handoff: Oregon Interior and Way Up in Maine
The baton passes north and east a bit on Monday. Grants Pass (92.0) and Eugene (82.0) stay in the Beautiful tier, joined by an unlikely partner clear across the country: Presque Isle, up in northern Maine, along with Roseburg and Springfield, Oregon. That zone runs a touch cooler, highs near 77°F with lows in the low 50s, dewpoints in the upper 40s, and just 1% rain chances. It's essentially the same recipe as Sacramento's Sunday, minus a few degrees.
Los Angeles, Portland (Oregon and Maine both show up), Riverside, Spokane, Salem, and Roanoke, Virginia land in the Nice tier Monday, which is still a genuinely pleasant day for most outdoor plans, just with a bit more cloud cover or, in LA's case, breezier air and higher AQI keeping it from climbing further.
The Bigger Picture: California Holds the Line While Heat Builds Everywhere Else
Here's where the week gets interesting. The Pacific Northwest's run doesn't last. WPC's extended discussion has a strong Pacific storm, possibly with an atmospheric river, moving into the Northwest Wednesday into Thursday, right as a stubborn ridge over the central and southeastern US keeps building dangerous heat from the Plains through the Midwest, Mid-Atlantic, and Southeast into late week. That ridge is also why CPC's week-two outlook flags a moderate risk of extreme heat, plus a Rapid Onset Drought concern, for the Central and Southern Plains and Mississippi Valley.
So while Oregon's window closes, California and the Southwest desert corridor keep going. Through Tuesday and into the rest of the week, the best available air settles into a familiar footprint: San Jose, San Francisco, Sacramento, Bakersfield, Fresno, Riverside, and San Diego cycle in and out of the Nice tier, mostly in the mid-to-high 70s and low 80s on the score scale. By Thursday and Friday (days 6 and 7), the pattern gets remarkably uniform, with Los Angeles, San Jose, San Francisco, Fresno, Sacramento, Bakersfield, Riverside, Stockton, and Santa Rosa all landing right at 82.0.
A few honest caveats for that stretch. Coastal breezes keep wind scores from climbing into Beautiful territory in spots like San Diego and Long Beach, where afternoon gusts run 16 to 17 mph, enough to notice at the beach or on an exposed trail. Inland smoke and haze push the average AQI up to around 70 by midweek, with modeled peaks near 125 in spots, so if you're sensitive to air quality, it's worth a quick check before a long trail day. And if your travels take you toward the Great Basin or Utah's canyon country, the same monsoon moisture that triggered flash flooding in slot canyons and burn scars this weekend is still in play, with a continuing Slight Risk of excessive rainfall through Monday. That's not the Central Valley's problem, but it's close enough geographically to keep in mind if your plans drift east.
What This Means If You're Actually Planning Something
If you've got a trailhead, a farmers market, or a ballpark outing on the books this week, the Central Valley and Bay Area are the safest bet through Friday, with Southern California and the desert Southwest running a close second. Meanwhile, a good chunk of today's outdoor baseball slate, from the Bronx to St. Louis, sits under the muggier, hazier air mass that's dragging much of the Plains and Midwest down to Fair or Decent territory. If you want the good stuff, you're looking west.
