Maine and New Hampshire Hit Perfect Today, and the Rest of the Country Is Only a Dial-Turn Away
Y'all, today's map has exactly one bullseye, and it's up in the north woods. Bangor, Berlin, Millinocket, and the rest of northern Maine and New Hampshire are sitting in genuine Perfect-tier air this morning, the kind of stat sheet that barely has a flaw to pick at. Berlin, NH is literally flawless at a 100.0 score. Bangor checks in at 98.3. Highs only in the low 70s, dewpoints near 49°F, wind light enough that a coffee on the porch won't need a lid, and AQI down in the 20s and 30s with zero smoke to speak of. If you're anywhere near Acadia, Baxter State Park, or the White Mountains today, this is the day you plan the long hike or the lake paddle around.
What's interesting is how close so much of the rest of the country came to joining that party, and what actually kept them out. The Columbia Basin (Tri-Cities and Yakima, WA) and the Aberdeen, SD area both post Beautiful scores of 92.0, and when you look at their underlying sub-scores, every single one of them, sky, wind, dewpoint, temperature, heat stress, already clears the bar Perfect requires. The one thing holding them back is air quality. Yakima's dealing with light haze off Cascade fire smoke, and Lowell, MA and a few others are running AQI in the 40s and 50s, just over the ≤35 gate that Perfect demands. It's not a weather problem in those spots. It's a pollution problem sitting on top of an otherwise flawless day.
That same story repeats a notch down the ladder. Coastal New England and the Southern California coast are Nice today, not because the temperature or humidity is lacking, but because Los Angeles is carrying an effective AQI of 80 with some surface smoke mixed in, and Boston's cloud cover and AQI of 52 keep it out of Beautiful territory. If you've got a Red Sox game on your radar tonight at Fenway (Mariners are in town), the actual sky and temperature will feel genuinely pleasant, it's the haze and cloud deck doing the quiet work of capping the score, not anything you'll necessarily notice from your seat.
Wednesday's Best Read: The Four Corners
Looking a bit further out, Wednesday (September 2) sets up as the week's most legitimately gorgeous day, and it's not in New England this time. The Four Corners region, Farmington, Durango, Cortez, and Dulce, reaches Beautiful with highs near 72°F, dewpoints in the mid-40s, and only about 30% cloud cover. Durango and Farmington are the standouts around a 91-92 score. Worth noting: this is right next door to the ongoing Southwest monsoon flood threat that's been soaking slot canyons and burn scars in Utah and western Colorado all week, including a Moderate Risk of excessive rainfall from WPC today. The Four Corners high country itself stays largely dry Wednesday, but if you're road-tripping through the region, keep an eye on nearby flash flood warnings rather than assuming the whole Southwest is in the clear.
Where the Nice Weather Goes From There
Days 4 through 7 are capped at Nice by the forecast-day rules, so don't expect fireworks on the score sheet, but the geography tells its own story. The best pocket rides the California coast and Central Valley into the weekend (Stockton, San Jose, Fresno, and neighbors are riding an 84-day streak of Fair-or-better conditions that just keeps going), then by Saturday it hops east to the Bay Area and interior valleys, and by Sunday, September 6, it lands in the Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic. Columbus, Washington DC, Toledo, and Richmond all post Beautiful-tier reads with cool dewpoints and highs in the mid-70s, a preview of the cold front that CPC's extended outlook says will finally knock down the dangerous heat gripping the central and southern Plains through Friday.
A few caveats worth carrying with you this week. UV runs high (7.5 to 7.9) in the Four Corners and interior Southwest, so sunscreen matters even on the prettiest days. Fire weather crews are watching downslope wind and low humidity across the Great Basin and northern California into Tuesday, a reminder that dry air cuts both ways. And severe storm risk builds across the Great Lakes and Northeast Tuesday into Wednesday, right as that Four Corners Beautiful day is unfolding a thousand miles away, so this is very much a week of regional trade-offs rather than one clean national story.
