Y'all, sometimes the atmosphere just shows up early. We flagged the Four Corners as a coming attraction for Wednesday in yesterday's post, and instead it went ahead and delivered today. Grand Junction, Colorado, Farmington, New Mexico, and the high country stretching into Apache Junction, Show Low, and Safford, Arizona are sitting in genuine Beautiful territory this morning, the best air anywhere in the country on September 1.
What's Actually Making This Air So Good
The numbers back it up. Highs run near 81°F with lows around 55°F, dewpoints sit at a dry 54°F, and cloud cover averages just 15 percent. Rain chances are down at 3 percent. Wind stays manageable at 12 mph with gusts to 17. Air quality is genuinely clean too, with AQI in the high 40s and almost no smoke in the column. That's a patio breakfast in Grand Junction, a Colorado National Monument hike, or a round of golf in Farmington without a single asterisk next to it, aside from a UV index near 7.8, so bring the sunscreen.
The one place to watch inside this zone is the low desert fringe. Apache Junction's own score drops to 72 because its high climbs near 97°F, and Phoenix, which gets swept into the wider Nice footprint mostly because it's being averaged with cooler high-terrain sites, is sitting at a much rougher 50. If you're anywhere in the Phoenix basin today, plan around the afternoon heat and lean on the morning and evening instead. Higher up in Show Low, Safford, and Farmington, none of that applies. Every one of those spots is clocking a 92, and per our best-day tracking, today is literally the best day of the week for all three.
Tomorrow the dry slot slides slightly west and softens a touch, with Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, and Santa Fe landing at Nice (78.4) alongside a surprise entry up in Grand Forks, North Dakota riding calm post-frontal air. It's a good, comfortable day, just not quite the same ceiling as today, mainly because afternoon warmth in the New Mexico valleys and a bit more cloud cover keep it a notch below Beautiful.
California's Quiet, Long-Running Streak
While the Southwest gets its moment in the spotlight, there's a bigger story sitting under the radar in California. Sacramento, Oakland, Stockton, Berkeley, Fairfield, Napa, Alameda, and a long list of Bay Area and Central Valley cities are riding live streaks of 85 straight days at Nice-or-better weather, dating back to early June. That's not a fluke week, that's a season's worth of good air.
This week is shaping up to extend it. The extended discussion has the Nice-tier zone migrating through California nearly every day: Los Angeles and San Diego lead a Southern California coastal pocket Thursday, then the ceiling shifts north to San Jose, San Francisco, Sacramento, and Stockton for the back half of the week, all landing in Nice territory again.
The catch for the coast is air quality, not the atmosphere itself. Los Angeles and Long Beach are held out of Beautiful specifically because AQI averages 73 in that zone, brushing up against the 50 threshold Beautiful requires, even though every other number, wind, dewpoint, sky cover, checks out clean. If you're sensitive to smoke or ozone, that's worth a quick check before a long beach day.
Why You Shouldn't Wait to Use This Stretch
Here's the honest caveat for the week ahead. WPC's extended discussion is blunt about what's coming: a broad ridge is building over the central U.S., and a genuinely dangerous late-summer heat wave takes hold across the central and southern Plains and into the Southeast by Friday and Saturday, with only the Pacific Northwest and interior West staying cool and unsettled. The nice-weather data backs that up in a subtle way too. The nationwide precipitation sub-score in the lower tiers keeps eroding through the week, from the mid-50s on Thursday down into the teens by day 7, and by next Monday nothing in the country reaches its own forecast ceiling. The pattern doesn't collapse into anything severe everywhere, it just gets warmer, cloudier, and less crisp almost everywhere outside the West Coast corridor.
So if you've got flexibility this week, use it now. The Four Corners high country, the California coast, and the Central Valley are the real windows, and they're open today.
