Sunday afternoon baseball is a decent gut check for how a day feels outside. The Braves and Phillies play at 1:10 this afternoon in Philadelphia, sitting in today's NICE tier with a 77 degree high and a dewpoint in the low 60s, comfortable enough for a day game without feeling sticky. A few hours earlier, the Brewers and Reds play in Cincinnati, right in the same Ohio Valley stretch that's got Columbus and Cleveland parked at Beautiful today. It's a genuinely good-air Sunday across a huge swath of the eastern half of the country.
But the single best score anywhere today sits in a much smaller spot: central and northern New York, where Schenectady, Utica, Queensbury, Watertown, and Ogdensburg have climbed all the way to Perfect at 95.8 out of 100. Massena and Fort Covington Hamlet are actually touching 100. A fresh, dry Canadian air mass scrubbed out the humidity and the haze overnight, dewpoints dropped into the low 50s, and the heat index tops out around 70 degrees. It's about as good as outdoor comfort gets, and it's the ceiling for the entire day nationally.
Here's the thing though. That New York pocket is a one-day wonder. By Monday it fades back to Beautiful, and the real story of this week isn't a single dramatic peak, it's consistency. That belongs to a string of small towns in Oregon's Umpqua Valley.
Douglas County, Oregon Quietly Owns the Week
Look at the weekly rankings and the top of the list reads like a drive down Interstate 5 through southern Oregon: Melrose, Green, Roseburg, Roseburg North, Rose Lodge, Siletz, Lookingglass, Sutherlin, Winston, Oakland, Tri-City, and Yoncalla all post seven out of seven Nice-or-better days, with mean scores in the high 70s. Every one of them peaks Monday, September 7, at a 92, which lands in the Beautiful category.
The pattern behind it is straightforward. A ridge is building over the Intermountain West and Pacific Northwest, and it's producing sunny skies, light wind, and dewpoints in the low 40s across the interior valleys. Eugene, just up the road from Roseburg, is a good stand-in for what these towns are feeling: a 76 degree high, a 47 degree dewpoint, and a score of 92 on Tuesday. What's notable is why this zone tops out at Beautiful instead of Perfect. It isn't air quality dragging it down the way it is on the East Coast today. The AQI out there is a clean 43, comfortably under the cap. It's just that the temperature and dewpoint sub-scores land at 89 and 90, a shade under the 92 needed for the top tier. In other words, this is genuinely excellent weather, not weather that got denied by a technicality.
Compare that to the East Coast's Beautiful zone today and Monday, where literally every comfort sub-score already clears the Perfect bar and the only thing holding it back is haze. Philadelphia and Queens are sitting at AQI readings in the 50s and 60s, just enough particulate to keep them capped at Nice or Beautiful instead of Perfect. A Longer-Running Streak Worth Knowing About
If Oregon is winning the week, California's Central Valley is winning the season. Sacramento, Stockton, Walnut Grove, Elk Grove, and a dozen other Central Valley cities are riding a 90-day streak of Nice-or-better conditions, with several of them hitting Perfect again today. That's three straight months without a bad-air day, which says more about the region's dry summer pattern than any single afternoon can.
The Caveats
A few things worth knowing before you plan around any of this. UV runs moderate to high in the Beautiful zones out west, with readings near 6.5 to 6.8, so midday hikes around Roseburg or Eugene still call for sunscreen. Back east, today's severe weather sits well south of the nice pockets, with a Slight Risk of thunderstorms across the Southern Appalachians into the Savannah River Valley, so if you're near Charlotte or Atlanta this afternoon, keep half an eye on the sky even while the Northeast and Ohio Valley enjoy their dry stretch. And any of the Beautiful-tier days across the East could tip into Perfect fast if AQI ticks down even a few points, so it's worth checking back tomorrow.
