If you're grabbing a patio breakfast anywhere from Milwaukee to Omaha to Minneapolis this morning, you picked a good day for it. That corridor is sitting in the best air of the day, a Beautiful-tier zone running roughly 76°F highs, mid-50s lows, dewpoints near 55°F, just 7% cloud cover, and winds light enough to leave your napkin alone. Milwaukee, Omaha, Minneapolis, Lincoln, Madison, Cedar Rapids, Rochester, and Green Bay are all scoring right around 92. Way up in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, L'Anse and Baraga are actually the highest raw scores in the whole country today, pushing 97 to 98.6, which is about as close to flawless as this outlook gets.
Here's the catch, and it's a small one: technically today's ceiling allows Perfect, and the Upper Midwest zone comes within half a point of that score. Highs run 73 to 75°F, dewpoints hover near 54°F, cloud cover is a wispy 14%, and winds stay light at 8 mph. Buffalo and Grand Rapids both hit the day's top score of 92. Same story as today, though: the zone-average AQI of 41 keeps Perfect just out of reach even though every underlying weather sub-score, including a perfect 100 on heat stress, would otherwise qualify.
That timing lines up nicely for outdoor plans. Rutgers visits Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts on Friday night, kicking off around 7:30 p.m. Eastern, right in the heart of this Beautiful window. Comfortable temperatures, low humidity, light wind, this is about as good as September football weather gets in New England.
Zoom Out: California and the Interior West Just Don't Have a Bad Day
While the eastern half of the country is trading its best weather back and forth day by day, a quieter pattern is settling over the West. From Saturday through the middle of next week, the extended discussion is blunt about it: a persistent upper-level ridge parks over the western US and holds the Rockies-to-Interior-West zone at a Nice ceiling for four consecutive days. Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose, Las Vegas, Sacramento, Bakersfield, Riverside, and Stockton all cycle through scores in the high 70s to low 80s day after day, never spectacular, never bad.
That consistency shows up in the streak data too. A cluster of East Bay and Sacramento-area cities, Antioch, Citrus Heights, Livermore, San Ramon, Pleasanton, Folsom, Rocklin, Brentwood, Dublin, El Dorado Hills, Oakley, Martinez, Auburn, and more, are all sitting on live 90-day streaks at Nice or better, dating back to June 13. Meanwhile the week's actual highest cumulative scorers are a run of small Sierra foothill and Central Valley towns like Plymouth, Lamont, Weedpatch, Willits, and Brooktrails, each averaging in the low-to-mid 80s across all seven days without ever needing a single Perfect reading to get there. San Jose and a string of South Bay suburbs, Fremont, Santa Clara, Pleasanton, Milpitas, and Dublin, also crack the weekly top 25. The eastern pattern isn't done churning.
