Y'all, today's nice weather story has a flight plan. A dry, cool air mass punched through the Ohio Valley and Great Lakes behind Sunday's front, and it's not staying put. It's Beautiful over Ohio and western Pennsylvania today, and by tomorrow that same crisp air is sitting over Philadelphia, DC, and Boston. Same front, two very different regional paydays, 24 hours apart.
Tonight: Columbus, Cleveland, Toledo, and Buffalo Cash In
Columbus, Cleveland, Toledo, Buffalo, and Warren, Michigan are all sitting at 92 out of 100 today, landing squarely in Beautiful territory, with Pittsburgh and Rochester close behind at 82. Highs only reach the upper 60s to upper 70s, dewpoints are running in the low 50s, and skies are mostly clear. That's the kind of afternoon where you actually want to be outside, not just tolerate being outside.
It lines up nicely with the Chicago White Sox at Cleveland Guardians game tonight at Progressive Field. First pitch weather should be about as comfortable as ballpark weather gets in September: cool, dry, and calm enough that nobody's fighting a stadium wind tunnel.
The one asterisk is wind. Post-frontal northwest flow is running 8-12 mph with gusts to 18-20 mph across this corridor, and that's actually the main thing keeping these cities from climbing all the way to Perfect. Air quality is the other limiter. Pittsburgh's AQI sits right at 50, Columbus at 39, and Perfect requires AQI at or below 35 zone-wide, so even flawless temperatures wouldn't be enough on their own today.
Worth knowing if you're headed south: this isn't a nationwide cool-down. Chattanooga is pushing toward 96°F today, with Knoxville near 90°F and the Tri-Cities area of Tennessee around 85°F. The comfortable air is very much an Ohio Valley and Great Lakes phenomenon, not a Southeast one.
Tomorrow: The Front Moves East, and So Does the Best Air
By Tuesday, that same fresh, dry high pressure has slid into the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. Philadelphia, the Bronx, Washington DC, Norfolk, and Bridgeport all hit 92 tomorrow, with Boston, Providence, Springfield, and Allentown right behind at 82. Highs land in the upper 60s to mid-70s, dewpoints drop into the upper 40s and low 50s, and Philadelphia's forecast office is calling for tranquil weather to hold at least through Thursday.
It's genuinely one of the nicer 48-hour planning windows we've flagged this month: pack a light jacket for the morning, but afternoons in this corridor should be sunny, dry, and easy. Same story as today though on the ceiling: Philadelphia's zone is sitting at AQI 44, still short of the 35 needed for Perfect, so Beautiful is the honest top tier even with essentially perfect precipitation and heat-stress scores.
Out west, a separate patch of good weather barely gets mentioned but deserves a nod: the Tri-Cities area of Washington also scores 92 today, and by Wednesday that quiet interior Pacific Northwest stretch expands to include Spokane, Salem, and Eugene, all landing at 92 as well. Two coasts, two unrelated ridges, both delivering some of the country's best air within the same 72 hours.
What Happens After That
Don't expect this exact setup to hold much past midweek. WPC has a strengthening frontal system lifting out of the Rockies with widespread showers and storms building across the Plains, and a Moderate Risk for excessive rainfall is already up over Iowa today. That wet pattern parks over the central Plains, Midwest, and Great Lakes through the weekend, which is why our extended outlook shows the nice-weather footprint shrinking and drifting west by Days 4 through 7, with Los Angeles, Seattle, Portland, and the Central Valley doing most of the heavy lifting by Thursday and Friday.
