Sacramento Valley's 90-Day Nice Weather Streak Explained

Sacramento, Napa, and the Central Valley are on a 90-day Nice-or-better streak, while small Oregon towns near Roseburg posted a perfect 7-for-7 week.

Ninety Days Straight: Sacramento Valley's Nice Weather Streak Refuses to Quit

Somewhere in the Sacramento Valley this morning, somebody is eating breakfast on a patio for what has to be close to the hundredth day in a row that made sense to do that. According to the streak tracker behind the Nice Weather outlook page, Sacramento, Napa, Stockton, Elk Grove, Vallejo, Fairfield, Vacaville, Davis, Lodi, and more than a dozen of their Central Valley neighbors are all sitting on a live 90-day streak of Nice-or-better conditions, dating back to right around the start of July. That's the longest active run in the entire country, and today it capped off with Sacramento posting a 92.0 score and landing in the Beautiful category, our second-highest tier.

The numbers behind Sacramento's day are almost unfairly clean: a high near 86°F, a dewpoint sitting at just 50.7°F, light wind, and a sky mostly free of clouds. It's warm enough to notice and dry enough that it doesn't matter. Today's national discussion actually singles out Sacramento as "warm but comfortably dry," which is about as good a description of Central Valley September as you'll find.

A Perfect Week in the Umpqua Valley

While Sacramento owns the longest streak, the single best score of the whole week belongs to a string of small towns up in southern Oregon's Umpqua Valley. Oakland, Oregon, population 936, tops the entire national weekly rankings with a mean score of 83.4 across all seven forecast days, and it wasn't alone. Roseburg, Sutherlin, Green, Winston, Glide, Yoncalla, Lookingglass, and Melrose all logged Nice-or-better conditions on every single one of the seven days measured, peaking at a 92.0 Beautiful score today. That's a rare thing this data rarely hands out: seven days out of seven, no exceptions, no asterisks.

It's a reminder that the biggest cities don't always win this outlook. Sometimes it's the small river valleys tucked between ridgelines, shielded from coastal wind and marine cloud, that end up with the steadiest air all week.

The Ohio Valley Streak Is Still Going, Just Not the Story Today

We've been tracking a separate run of Beautiful days from Columbus and Lexington through the Carolinas for a few days now, and that pattern is still intact today, with Raleigh, Charlotte, Louisville, and Cincinnati all posting 92.0 scores of their own under the same high pressure that's been parked there since the weekend. It's genuinely excellent weather. But we've already told that story, so today the spotlight belongs to the West Coast, where the streaks are longer and, frankly, more remarkable given how often marine layer and wildfire smoke usually mess with California's numbers this time of year.

The Caveats Worth Knowing

None of this is universal good news for California. The Storm Prediction Center has an elevated fire weather concern today and tomorrow for the mountains and foothills of Ventura, Santa Barbara, and Los Angeles counties, where offshore winds could gust 35 to 45 mph with relative humidity dropping into the teens. That's a different air mass than the one sitting over Sacramento and Napa, but it's a reminder that "nice" in one corner of a state doesn't mean fire-safe in another.

Farther east, the bigger weather story of the week has nothing to do with nice conditions at all. A slow-moving system pulling tropical moisture from the remnants of Hurricane Polo is setting up a multi-day Moderate Risk of excessive rainfall from the Four Corners into the Southern Plains, running Monday through Wednesday. It's a legitimate flood threat for the Southwest even as places like Albuquerque manage to squeeze out Nice-category scores of their own later this week, once the rain clears and a drier northwest flow takes over ahead of the Balloon Fiesta's October 3rd opening.

What to Watch Through the Weekend

The extended outlook keeps a western ridge in charge through Day 7, meaning Phoenix, San Diego, Seattle, and Albuquerque should keep trading the best available scores in the country, even though the forecast-day rule caps that outlook at Nice rather than anything higher. East of the Rockies, a slow-moving storm degrades the Plains and Midwest picture day by day, with wind and cloud cover doing most of the damage rather than temperature. None of that touches the Central Valley or the Umpqua Valley, though, which is exactly why those two streaks are worth watching. High pressure doesn't always cooperate for this long, and when it does, it's worth noticing while it lasts.
