Today's the Last Perfect Day Before Nice Weather Ceiling Drops
A tiny Wisconsin pocket hits Perfect today while air quality and forecast rules cap the rest of the week at Beautiful and Nice. Here's where to be and when.

Last Call for Perfect: Monday's Wisconsin Pocket Is the Top Tier Before the Ceiling Drops
If you want the single best outdoor day the data can produce this week, it's today, and it's a small one. A compact pocket of southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois, Madison, Rockford, Waukesha, Oshkosh, and La Crosse, is sitting at a score of 97.8, the top of the whole outlook. Everything else this week, even the genuinely lovely stretches coming in the next couple of days, tops out a notch lower. That's not pessimism, it's just how the gates work once the air mass and the calendar line up a certain way.
Today: The Wisconsin Window
Under quiet high pressure, this corner of the Upper Midwest is getting a flawless autumn Monday. Highs sit around 60 to 61 degrees, overnight lows near 40, dewpoints in the mid 40s, and wind barely moving at 7 mph. Precipitation, wind, and heat stress all score a perfect 100. The only thing keeping the overall number from being untouchable is air quality, and it's close: the zone's AQI runs about 34, just one point under the 35 ceiling the top tier requires. That's about as tight a margin as this outlook ever shows.
The one asterisk is morning frost in the colder Wisconsin valleys, so if you're headed to a farmers market or a trailhead early, bring a layer you can shed by midmorning. By afternoon this is unbeatable patio weather.

Today's Halo: A Much Bigger Beautiful Band
Surrounding that bullseye is a far larger swath running through the central Plains, Midwest, Tennessee Valley, and Mid-Atlantic interior, think Chicago, Nashville, Oklahoma City, El Paso, and Richmond, that lands at Beautiful, scoring 89.3. Every sub-score here, dewpoint, precipitation, sky, heat stress, wind, and even temperature, clears the bar required for Perfect. The one thing holding this huge region back is air quality running about 42, just above the 35-point ceiling the top category demands. It's a quality-gate miss, not a weather miss. Highs reach the mid 70s to near 80 in spots like Oklahoma City, a little cooler toward Chicago and Richmond, and skies are basically clear everywhere.
Tomorrow: Beautiful Holds, Perfect Stays Out of Reach
Tuesday's technical ceiling is still Perfect, but nothing actually gets there. A corridor from Dallas and El Paso through Springfield, Missouri, Indianapolis, and Washington, DC, scores 88.7, with every sub-score at least 92 out of 100, basically flawless on paper. Background AQI sitting in the mid 40s nationwide is the only thing standing in the way. Just behind it, a Nice-tier band covering Philadelphia, San Antonio, Portland, and Albuquerque scores 84.7, dragged down less by weather than by uneven air quality, San Antonio and Portland both run AQI in the high 60s to low 70s even as Albuquerque and Indianapolis sit at the 82.0 ceiling.
That Albuquerque mention is worth sitting with if you're still chasing balloons this week. The Balloon Fiesta has been flying over a city that's held Beautiful-to-Nice conditions since the weekend, and that run looks likely to continue, light wind and dry air being exactly what you want for mass ascension mornings.
Wednesday: Carolinas and Central Virginia, Capped on Purpose
By Wednesday, the best weather sits in a narrow corridor from Roanoke and Virginia Beach through Raleigh and Florence, scoring 89.7, nearly identical to Tuesday's top zone. But Day 3 outlooks are built with a rule that caps them at Beautiful no matter what the raw score says, so this one stays there even though the numbers would otherwise knock on the door of the top tier. Dewpoints near 54, zero rain chance, and wind barely topping 7 mph make this about as good as fall gets on the coastal Mid-Atlantic. A broader Nice band covering Philadelphia, Dallas, Seattle, and Atlanta trails close behind at 80.4, held back by nothing more than afternoon highs running a degree or two warm.

Days 4 Through 7: Nice Is the New Normal, Then a Gulf Wrinkle
From Thursday onward, a forecast-day rule pins the national ceiling at Nice regardless of how the numbers shake out, and a broad eastern ridge keeps a dry, light-wind corridor from the Southern Plains into the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic hovering around 78 to 80 on the Nice scale through midweek. Philadelphia, El Paso, Louisville, Indianapolis, and Albuquerque keep trading the top spot.
The wrinkle shows up late in the period. A disturbance in the southwestern Gulf, the same one meteorologists are watching for possible tropical development, starts organizing a wind and gust field that erodes sky and precipitation scores across the broader South by Saturday and Sunday. Atlanta slips to Fair in the travel outlook, Pensacola trends toward hazardous, and the gusty, cloud-prone pattern spreads toward the Southeast. If you're training for the Chicago Marathon on October 11, that's Day 7 in this data, and Chicago itself dips into the Fair tier that day with breezier, cloudier conditions in the current run. It's far enough out that confidence is genuinely low, but it's worth a second look as race week approaches rather than assuming the current mild pattern just holds.
Where to Just Live This Week
If you'd rather stop reading the day by day and just go somewhere reliably pleasant, the data points hard at the Texas South Plains and New Mexico desert corridor, Lubbock, Las Cruces, Roswell, Clovis, and a string of smaller towns around them average 83.4 across all seven days with a Beautiful peak today. Nobody in the country has a steadier run this week.
And if you want a longer view, Sacramento, Stockton, and the rest of California's Central Valley are riding a 90-day streak of Nice-or-better conditions, their last Perfect reading all the way back on August 29. Worth noting that an October heatwave is lingering across central and southern California into this week, so that streak isn't about cool, crisp air, it's dry, stable, and comfortable by the numbers even while running warm. Different kind of nice, same scoreboard.
