Big Bend's Best Weather Day Is Capped by Smoke, Not the Sky

Van Horn and Terlingua post the week's top Nice Weather score, but smoke keeps Big Bend National Park itself lower. Plus Monday's Oregon coast standout and a Chicago Marathon weather check.

RHY Nice Weather Outlook Day 1

Big Bend Has the Nicest Air in the Country Today, and the Park Itself Still Can't Catch the Top Score

The headlines this week have been all hurricane, all the time. Isaias came ashore near Destin Friday night and is still wringing out flooding rain over the Southeast. Tropical Storm Rachel is lined up to do something similar to Southern California and the Southwest this weekend. So it's worth pointing out that while all that is happening, a quiet corner of far west Texas is having one of the best weather days anybody will see this week, and the way it's scoring is a nice little lesson in how much air quality matters even on an otherwise flawless day.

Van Horn and Terlingua are today's best seats in the country

Out around Van Horn, Big Bend National Park, and Terlingua, highs are running near 83 with lows around 59 and dewpoints sitting in the low 50s, which is about as dry and pleasant as October air gets in Texas. Rain chances are basically zero, cloud cover is only around 23 percent, and wind is a manageable 12 mph with gusts near 19. That combination pushes the zone to a 91.3 score, which lands it in the Beautiful category, our second-highest tier.

It can't climb any higher today, and not because the weather has a flaw. Effective AQI across these towns runs 47 to 53, which sits above the ceiling the next tier up requires, so even a flawless atmosphere gets held back by haze drifting through the region. UV is up near 6.9, so sunscreen and a hat are worth packing if you're out at the overlooks or on a trail most of the day.

Here's the detail that stood out most in today's data: Big Bend National Park itself, sitting right in the middle of this gorgeous zone, only scores 72. Van Horn and Terlingua are posting 92. The raw weather at the park is nearly identical, 82 degrees with a 54 degree dewpoint, but NOAA's smoke analysis flags medium visible smoke specifically over the park, which caps its score independent of how nice the temperature and humidity look. If you're planning a Big Bend trip this weekend, that's a reminder that "inside the park" and "the town twenty minutes up the road" can be two different weather experiences, at least on paper.

RHY Nice Weather Outlook Day 1

A broad Nice swath trails just behind

El Paso, Tyler, Lumberton, Marfa, and Mountainair make up today's Nice tier, scoring 78.9. Highs near 82 and dewpoints in the upper 50s keep things comfortable, and heat stress is a non-issue. The ceiling here is also an air quality story rather than a weather one: El Paso's AirNow reading of 67 exceeds the 50 threshold required to move up a tier, so this zone is stuck at Nice even though the sky, wind, and temperature numbers are all solid. UV runs 6.4 to 6.9 here too, so the same sun advice applies.

Everywhere else today, from Los Angeles to Chicago to Houston, the story is wind, warmth, and smoke keeping things at Fair or Decent. Houston in particular is dealing with an effective AQI of 122, which is enough on its own to prevent that whole corridor from reaching Nice no matter how the rest of the forecast looks.

Chicago Marathon runners get a breezy, seasonable Sunday

Looking one day ahead to Sunday, Chicago sits in a Fair-scoring zone with a forecast high near 71 degrees and wind around 18 mph, good for a score of 71.1. That's honestly solid marathon weather, cool enough to run comfortably, just breezy enough that you'll feel it on the lakefront stretches. The day's actual best scores pair an unlikely couple: the Pacific Northwest and the Gulf South. Seattle and Portland sit in the upper 50s to mid 60s while Baton Rouge and Jackson run near 90, and somehow both ends of that temperature spread land in the same Nice-scoring zone at 78.5, held back almost entirely by gusty wind rather than heat or moisture.

One more thing worth flagging before you get too excited about Southern California's numbers later this week: Tropical Storm Rachel is bringing a Moderate risk of excessive rainfall to San Diego, northwest Arizona, southern Nevada, and southwest Utah for Day 2, with a Tropical Storm Warning up for the San Diego coast. LA and San Diego both show improving Nice-category scores by midweek in our data, but that's after Rachel moves through, not before. If you're in that corridor this weekend, plan around the rain first.

Monday is the week's best single day, and it's on the Oregon coast

The clear standout of the whole seven-day outlook is Monday along the northern Oregon coast and southwest Washington, in towns like Longview, Silverdale, Aberdeen, Florence, and Lincoln City. That zone scores 87.0, the highest of any zone this week, built on calm 4.8 mph wind, zero rain chance, and highs near 58 that keep heat stress a complete non-factor. Dewpoints in the upper 30s make the air feel crisp rather than damp, and AQI near 36 is about as clean as it gets. Pack a jacket for the cool mornings, frost is possible in sheltered valleys, and know that Florence, Oregon specifically runs breezier than its neighbors at 17.3 mph gusts, enough to knock its individual score down to 72 even while towns ten miles away sit in the low 90s.

RHY Nice Weather Outlook Day 3

That same Monday, the Southeast finally gets its reward after a miserable week of Isaias. Atlanta, Jacksonville, Columbus, and Tallahassee post a Nice-scoring 78.4 as dry air and sunshine settle in behind the storm, with highs near 81 and comfortably light wind. It's a legitimate get-outside day for a region that's spent the better part of a week under flash flood warnings.

Farther out, the ridge heads for the desert

Beyond Monday, confidence naturally drops, but the broader pattern described in this week's discussion is worth knowing: the ridge of dry, calm weather currently centered over the Plains slides westward through the week, eventually setting up over the Desert Southwest by next Friday. Phoenix, Las Vegas, Tucson, and a scattering of California and Oregon cities are showing Beautiful-category scores by Day 7, while a strengthening system tracking through the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley pushes wind gusts toward 40 mph in Chicago by the end of the period. Treat that far-out picture as a reasonable direction rather than a locked forecast.

If you want to track how any of this shifts day to day, the full breakdown lives on the Nice Weather outlook page, including the regional maps and the city-by-city scores behind everything above.
