Nice Weather Today: PNW, Nashville, Tucson Share Top Tier

Seattle, Nashville, and Tucson all hit Beautiful today while the Appalachian corridor leads the week, setting up ideal conditions for Sunday's Marine Corps Marathon in Virginia.

Seattle, Nashville, and Tucson Share the Ceiling Today, and the Appalachians Are Setting Up a Marathon Sunday

Some days the nice weather map tells one simple story. Today it's telling three, and they don't have a lot in common geographically. Seattle, Nashville, and Tucson are all sitting at the same Beautiful tier this morning, 68 degrees and 92 degrees apart in the forecast, held together by the same broad ridge and the same quiet limiting factor.

Today's Odd Trio

The Tennessee Valley into Kentucky and West Virginia, the western Carolinas and Mid-Atlantic highlands, southeastern Arizona, and the Pacific Northwest interior are all running Beautiful today, and the numbers behind that label are almost comically clean. Zone-wide cloud cover sits near 3 percent. Rain chances are 0 percent. Wind averages a light 8 mph. Nashville is headed for 73 degrees under a cloudless sky. Portland and Seattle are cooler and crisper, in the mid 50s with dewpoints in the low 40s, about as dry and calm as October gets in the Northwest. Tucson checks in warmer at 77 degrees with a bit more wind.

Here's the catch, and it's the same catch in all three places: air quality. The zone-average AQI sits at 44, just above the 35 ceiling that Perfect requires, and dewpoint and temperature sub-scores land a few points shy of that top gate too. Nothing about the sky or the rain or the wind is holding this day back. It's haze and particulates, mostly background stuff, not wildfire smoke. If you're sensitive to air quality, it's still worth a glance before a long run, but for most people this reads as a genuinely excellent day to be outside, just not a flawless one.

The Appalachians Are Having a Moment

Zoom out past today and a pattern becomes obvious. The week's top-scoring cities, according to the weekly rankings, are dominated by one stretch of real estate: Boone and Sparta in North Carolina, Marion, Bracey, Atkins, Galax, and South Hill in Virginia, Winston-Salem, Danville, Bristol, Staunton, and Ashland, Kentucky all land in the top 25 with mean scores near 83 to 85 across all seven days, every single one of them hitting Beautiful or better at least once this week. That's not a lucky Tuesday. That's a corridor that has been sitting under the same dry ridge for days running, from the Blue Ridge down into eastern Kentucky and Tennessee.

Which brings us to Sunday. The Marine Corps Marathon runs through Arlington, Virginia on October 25, and the Day 3 nice weather outlook has the central Appalachians, western Virginia, and the broader Mid-Atlantic sitting right at the Beautiful ceiling that day, highs near 67 degrees, lows near 44, dewpoints in the low 40s, essentially 0 percent rain chance, and wind so light it barely registers, averaging around 6 mph. UV sits at a moderate 4.5, so sunscreen is still worth it if you're out there for hours, but overheating is not going to be the story. This is about as favorable a forecast as marathon weather gets, cool enough at the start to need a throwaway layer, mild enough by midday that it won't be a slog.

RHY Nice Weather Outlook Day 3

The same Sunday pattern also helps anyone still working the North Carolina State Fair in Raleigh. The Southeast sits inside that same broad dry stretch today and into the weekend, so fairground mornings should stay comfortable rather than muggy.

Meanwhile, California Gets Its Turn

Saturday flips the spotlight west. Day 2's top tier runs from central and northern California into the Gulf South, with San Jose, San Francisco, Sacramento, and Stockton all landing in the low to mid 80s on the nice weather scale alongside Jackson, Mississippi and towns across eastern Tennessee. Same story as today though: air quality in the upper 40s keeps the whole zone a few points shy of Perfect even with 74 degree highs, dry 43 degree dewpoints, and barely any cloud cover. It's a good weekend to get outside in the Bay Area, just not a pristine one.

You can track how these zones keep moving around the country on the Nice Weather outlook page, which updates daily as the ridge shifts.

Where Not To Plan a Picnic

The flip side of this calm, dry pattern is sitting out in the Southwest. WPC has a Slight Risk of excessive rainfall and SPC has a Slight Risk of severe thunderstorms stacked up over New Mexico, far West Texas, and southern Colorado through the weekend, the same stubborn upper-level low that's been parked over the Four Corners region much of this week, the one that already produced 70-plus mph gusts and multiple tornado watches earlier this week. If your plans involve Albuquerque, El Paso, or the southern Rockies, this is not your window.

Looking further out, the Days 4 through 7 pattern shows the broad NICE-or-better footprint sliding around, East Coast and Southwest pockets Monday and Tuesday, a relocation to the Gulf Coast and California by midweek, then a gradual erosion as clouds, wind, and the period's first thunderstorms creep back in by next Thursday. None of that changes this weekend's plans, but it's worth knowing the current stretch of clear, dry air won't last indefinitely everywhere.

Bottom Line

Today's best air shows up in three places that don't talk to each other much, the Northwest, the Tennessee Valley, and southeast Arizona, and the Appalachian corridor running through it all has quietly built the best overall week in the country. If you're running Sunday in Arlington, you picked a good year for it.
