Nice Weather Outlook Oct 26: Carolinas to Southwest Near Perfect

Today's best weather runs from the Carolinas to the desert Southwest, just short of Perfect on air quality. See why, plus the midweek and Halloween outlook.

Two Points From Perfect: Today's Best Air Stretches From the Carolinas to the Desert Southwest

Good morning, y'all. Some days the Nice Weather data gives you a clean, obvious story, and today is one of those days. There's a long, connected ribbon of excellent fall weather running from the southern Appalachians and Carolinas all the way into southeastern Arizona, southern Nevada, and southwestern California. It's rated Beautiful, which is the second-highest tier on our scale, and the only thing standing between this zone and the top Perfect rating is air quality, not temperature, not wind, not rain.

Today's Beautiful Zone Is a Weather Win With an Air Quality Asterisk

According to this morning's discussion, that Carolinas-to-desert-Southwest zone scores 89.5 out of 100, just 2.5 points shy of Perfect. Every single weather sub-score already clears the Perfect threshold: precipitation is a flawless 100, heat stress 99.9, wind 96.2, temperature 96.0, sky 95.0. Highs are averaging 72.5 degrees, cloud cover is sitting around 19 percent, and winds are about as light as this outlook gets anywhere in the country at 7.9 mph. The one number that won't cooperate is air quality. The zone's average effective AQI of 45 is comfortably safe, but it's still over the 35 ceiling Perfect requires.

That gap shows up city by city. Charlotte and Tucson both land a perfect individual score of 92.0, the ceiling for Beautiful, with AQI readings of 44 and 46. Raleigh, Greensboro, Fayetteville, Oxnard, Santa Maria, and Roanoke are right there with them at 92.0 too. Phoenix and Las Vegas are technically in the same Beautiful tier but trail at 81.4 and 80.9, pulled down by warmer afternoons and higher urban AQI readings near 55 and 59. If you're choosing between a patio breakfast in Charlotte or Phoenix today, Charlotte is the one with the cleaner air and the cooler, crisper morning.

RHY Nice Weather Outlook Day 1

Dewpoints across this zone average in the low 40s, so there's no mugginess to worry about, and the overnight lows dropping into the 40s (with some rural valleys slipping into the 30s) mean this is sweater-at-dawn, shirt-sleeves-by-afternoon weather. UV runs moderate, around 5, so hats and sunscreen still earn their keep if you're outside past midday.

A Louisiana Streak Worth Noticing

While the headline zone shifts around day to day, a cluster of small Louisiana towns has quietly put together one of the longest active Fair-or-better streaks in the country. Lake Charles, Sulphur, Crowley, Moss Bluff, Eunice, Jennings, and more than a dozen neighboring communities are riding a 22-day live streak, their best run on record, with the most recent Beautiful-tier day landing back on October 20. That's three weeks of dependable, workable outdoor weather in a part of the state that spent the first half of the month under tropical and flood threats. It's a good reminder that the quiet stretches matter as much as the dramatic ones.

Wednesday Takes the Baton: Central Plains and the Lower Mississippi Valley

Looking ahead, Wednesday (Day 3, October 28) hands the best weather of the week to a dry ridge running from the central Plains into the lower Mississippi Valley. Highs near 77 degrees, dewpoints around 48, and skies only 18 percent covered add up to another Beautiful day, capped at that tier by the forecast-day rules rather than the underlying numbers, which are nearly as strong as today's desert Southwest zone. Little Rock, El Paso, Las Cruces, Fort Smith, Hot Springs, Monroe, and Alamogordo all show up near the top of Wednesday's rankings, with Bloomfield, Missouri posting the day's single best score at 92.0.

RHY Nice Weather Outlook Day 3

Confidence on a day three forecast is reasonably good here since WPC's short-term discussion has a strong ridge holding over the central and southern US through midweek, with rain chances only creeping in toward the edges. If you've got hiking, yard work, or a cookout flexible enough to land on Wednesday instead of this weekend, this is the smarter bet.

The Turn Nobody Wants: Halloween Weekend Loses the Nice Tier Entirely

Here's the part of the forecast worth planning around rather than hoping around. Days 4 and 5 (Thursday and Friday) still manage a narrow Nice-tier corridor, first over the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley, then sliding east into the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast as the ridge axis shifts. But by Saturday and Sunday, October 31 and November 1, an amplifying western trough spreads cloud cover and rain chances across nearly the entire outlook area. No zone reaches the Nice tier on either day. The best anyone gets is Fair, and in a lot of places it's Decent. WPC's extended discussion backs this up, flagging an upper low settling into the Northwest with tropical moisture streaming into Texas by Thursday and Friday, then shifting toward the lower Mississippi Valley and Southeast over the weekend.

That timing matters for a couple of things on the calendar. The Breeders' Cup runs in Lexington on October 30, which falls right in that transition window; Thursday's Ohio Valley Nice pocket is already retreating east by Friday, so Lexington's outlook for race day leans more toward Fair than anything special, and it's still far enough out to watch rather than bank on. The New York City Marathon on November 1 lands squarely in the Day 7 slump, when the Northeast sky sub-score is down near 34 and the Fair tier is about the best available. Neither forecast is locked in at four to six days out, but neither one points toward standout marathon or raceday weather either.

The Week in One Line

If you want the simplest version: get outside today or Wednesday. The Carolinas-to-desert-Southwest stretch and the Wednesday central Plains setup are the two legitimately excellent windows this week, and both are being held to Beautiful by technicalities (air quality today, a forecast-day scoring cap on Wednesday) rather than by anything actually wrong with the weather. After that, the pattern turns cloudier and wetter almost everywhere through Halloween weekend. For a running look at which cities and small towns are stacking up the best scores day by day, the Nice Weather outlook page tracks it live, including those Louisiana and Virginia towns currently riding some of the longest streaks on the board this fall.
