Nice Weather Forecast: Best Days This Week Before the Reset

A three-day run of Beautiful weather from the Southwest to the Ohio Valley gives way to a solid Halloween and a cloudier marathon morning before the Southwest rebounds.

Three Good Days, a Halloween Treat, and a Marathon Morning Reality Check

Y'all, this week has a shape to it. There's a genuinely good three-day run happening right now, it hands off cleanly to a Northeast Halloween that actually cooperates, then the whole country goes a little flat for marathon morning in New York before the Southwest and California pick the baton back up. Here's how to plan around it.

Today: The Beautiful Corridor Runs From El Paso to the Mississippi Delta

Today's best air sits in a long diagonal ribbon from El Paso and Albuquerque through Tucson, then east across the Mississippi Delta into east-central Missouri. Albuquerque, Tucson, Las Cruces, Greenville, and Alamogordo are all posting scores of 92, which lands them in Beautiful territory, just a couple points under the Perfect gate. The sub-scores tell the story: sky cover is basically nonexistent (13 percent average cloud cover) and rain chances are essentially zero. The only things holding this corridor back from the top tier are dewpoint and wind, both sitting just under the strict 92-point cutoff that Perfect requires across the board. El Paso itself is the outlier here, its own score is only 68.5 thanks to a muggier dewpoint and a higher local AQI reading, a good reminder that even a great zone has an edge city that doesn't get the memo.

A step down, a broad Nice belt covers Texas into the Ohio Valley, with Memphis and Pittsburgh as good stand-ins for that tier. Chicago and Fort Worth technically sit in that same belt but underperform it, Chicago on wind gusts near 23 mph, Fort Worth on a muggier 65 degree dewpoint. Meanwhile the West Coast, Upper Midwest, and a Gulf-to-Northeast corridor are stuck at Fair, limited more by clouds than anything else, and there's a real air quality flag worth knowing about if you're in Los Angeles or near Chicago today, with localized AirNow readings running into the 140s even though the broader regional average looks clean.

Thursday: The Beautiful Tier Jumps North to Iowa and the Dakotas

By Thursday, the ridge of good air slides north. Sioux City, St. Cloud, and a run of small western Iowa towns, Holstein, Battle Creek, Schaller, Early, land some of the best individual scores of the whole outlook period, several pushing past 99 on our underlying scale. The zone-wide average still lands at Beautiful rather than Perfect, and the reason is almost entirely air quality: effective AQI of 45 is clean by any normal measure, but the Perfect gate demands 35 or below, so this one's locked out by a technicality rather than anything you'd actually notice outside.

A broad Nice tier covers the Ohio Valley, Southeast, and Gulf Coast the same day, running through Philadelphia, Columbus, Atlanta, and New Orleans, with the same story: every individual sub-score clears the bar for the next tier up except a background AQI in the low 50s that caps it just short.

Friday: The Breeders' Cup Gets the Last Beautiful Day of the Week

Friday is the last day this outlook period that the Beautiful tier is even mathematically available, and it lands almost exactly on top of the Breeders' Cup, running through central Ohio into northwestern West Virginia and up into northeastern Kentucky. Columbus, Dayton, and Parkersburg post scores of 92, with highs in the mid-60s, light 7 to 9 mph wind, and dewpoints in the low 50s. Nearly every sub-score here is maxed out, precipitation, wind, heat stress, and temperature are all effectively perfect, with only a touch of cloud cover (29 percent) keeping it from going higher.

The Nice tier wraps around that core and covers the rest of the mid-Atlantic and Ohio Valley, including Indianapolis, Washington DC, Raleigh, Pittsburgh, and Meads, Kentucky, right in the neighborhood of the Breeders' Cup crowd. Every underlying component in that belt actually clears the threshold for Beautiful, dewpoint, precipitation, temperature, and wind are all strong, it's again a one-point AQI overage that's the only thing keeping it classified a notch lower. Translation for anyone headed to the track or just sitting on a patio in the Ohio Valley Friday: it will feel every bit as good as the number suggests, air quality nuance aside.

RHY Nice Weather Outlook Day 3

Halloween Night Holds Up in the Northeast

Saturday, October 31, the pattern loses its top gear, Beautiful and Perfect are off the table nationally for the rest of this outlook window. But the good news for trick-or-treaters: a Nice-tier pocket clings to the Northeast and Great Lakes right through Halloween night. Philadelphia, Manhattan, Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, and Allentown all post scores of 82. Highs run near 57, dewpoints stay in the upper 30s, and skies are mostly clear at only 33 percent cloud cover. There's a minor wind flag, gusts over 35 mph affect about 4 percent of the zone, worth knowing if you're walking a route with a lot of open ground, but it's not enough to spoil the evening.

Sunday: Marathon Morning Gets Fair, Not Great

By Sunday, November 1, the national ceiling drops to Fair everywhere, no zone anywhere in the country reaches Nice. That's marathon day in New York, and it shows in the numbers: Philadelphia tops out at 70.2, the Bronx and Boston sit at 72, all Fair. The limiting factor isn't temperature or humidity, both are fine, it's sky cover climbing into the 50s and a steadily building storm system approaching from the west. Runners should expect a cooler, cloudier morning than the stretch that came before it, not bad weather, just not the kind of day that makes our top tier. Elsewhere, Houston stays stuck in the mid-50s on score thanks to persistent heat and humidity, the same story it's told most of this outlook.

The Southwest and California Take Over Next Week

The pattern rebuilds fast once the weekend system clears. By Monday, November 2, a West Coast ridge pushes a fresh Beautiful pocket into California's Central Valley and coast, Fresno, Bakersfield, Oxnard, and Santa Maria all score 82, with highs near 73 and light wind under 10 mph. Phoenix and San Diego are still only Fair that day. Then on Tuesday, November 3, that ridge consolidates over the Desert Southwest and the Nice tier spreads wide: Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Diego, El Paso, Tucson, Las Cruces, and Yuma all land at 82. The tradeoff is out in the Plains, where a developing surface low pushes severe wind gust coverage from about 1 percent of the country's lowest tier up to 8 percent by the end of the period, something to watch if you're traveling through the central states that week.

A Few Things Worth Knowing

Air quality is the quiet theme of this whole stretch, not bad air by any health standard, but just high enough in several of our best zones to keep them from climbing to the very top category even when the sky, wind, and temperature numbers are essentially maxed out. If you're chasing a long run of good weather day after day, the Rogue Valley in southern Oregon, Ashland, Phoenix, and Talent, is sitting on streaks past 54 consecutive days at or above our Nice threshold, and a cluster of towns around Lake Charles, Louisiana, isn't far behind at 24 days. Neither shows up as the single best zone on any one day this week, but they're the quiet overachievers of the season.
