Alabama's 24-Day Nice Weather Streak Outlasts the Southwest's Headlines

Small Alabama and Georgia towns are riding a 24-day Nice weather streak while the Southwest and Carolinas post Beautiful conditions today. Here's where the best air is heading next.

Central Alabama's Quiet 24-Day Streak Is Outlasting Every Flashier Weather Story This Fall

Most of the weather news out of the country lately has been loud. Oak Creek near Cornville, Arizona set a stage record this weekend that stood since 1993. Highway 151 in Colorado collapsed under rushing water. A Slight Risk of severe storms has been bouncing from Dallas to Kansas City for two straight days. None of that is this post.

This post is about West Blocton, Alabama. Population small enough that you won't find it on most maps, and it just matched its best weather streak on record: 24 consecutive days at Nice or better. It's got company too. Wilton, Montevallo, Jemison, Thorsby, Clanton, Helena, Pine Level, Alabaster, Calera, Pelham, Marbury, Indian Springs Village, Shelby, Deatsville, and Columbiana, Alabama are all riding the identical 24-day streak, alongside Buena Vista, Cusseta, and Talbotton over the state line in Georgia. None of these towns had a Perfect-tier day this week. Most of them haven't touched Perfect since late October. What they've done instead is simpler and arguably more useful: no bad days. Three and a half weeks of mornings worth stepping outside for, back to back, without a washout or a miserable mugfest in between.

That's the kind of record nobody throws a parade for, but if you live in one of those towns, you've probably noticed. It's the difference between a forecast you have to plan around and one you can just trust.

What's Actually Happening Today

The national map on this first Monday of November has a familiar leader and a less obvious runner-up. The Desert Southwest takes top honors again, with Las Vegas, Yuma, Lake Havasu City, and Bullhead City all scoring Beautiful. The composite numbers there are about as clean as it gets this time of year: highs near 63°F, dewpoints near 47°F, 20 percent cloud cover, essentially no rain chance, and winds light enough to not matter. The one thing holding this zone out of Perfect territory is the air itself staying a touch too cool to max out the temperature score. Not a complaint anybody in Las Vegas is likely to file.

The quieter story is the Nice-tier band running from Phoenix across the southern Appalachians into the Carolinas and up through the Mid-Atlantic. Charlotte, Philadelphia, Washington DC, and Baltimore are all sitting around 80 to 82, carried by the same dry air and clear skies as the desert, just a few degrees cooler. Charlotte and the North Carolina Piedmont, including Lake Norman of Catawba and Sherrills Ford, are posting some of the better individual scores in the entire Southeast region today. If you're doing a patio breakfast or a Monday trail walk anywhere from Charlotte to DC, you picked a good week to need an excuse to be outside.

The Pattern Behind It

WPC's short-range discussion explains why the map looks split the way it does. An intensifying low is winding up over the central High Plains this morning, dragging a cold front east and setting up another round of severe storms and heavy rain from the southern Plains into the Mississippi Valley over the next two days. That's the loud part of the forecast, and it's the same system that's kept the Southwest's recent flood recovery top of mind. Everyone sitting west and east of that system, though, gets the benefit of dry air sliding in behind the trough exit and ahead of the next one. That's the Southwest's Beautiful day and the Carolinas/Mid-Atlantic's Nice day, both riding the same high pressure nose, for different reasons.

Where the Good Weather Goes Next

Tuesday keeps the desert in charge, with El Paso, Tucson, Yuma, Roswell, and several smaller Arizona and New Mexico towns all hitting Beautiful at a 92 score. The forecast discussion notes something almost funny here: every sub-score in that zone, sky, wind, temperature, dewpoint, already clears the bar for Perfect. The only thing keeping it one tier down is air quality sitting just above the stricter 35 AQI ceiling that Perfect requires. The weather is perfect. The air is merely very good.

By Wednesday, the best conditions shift east into south-central Texas, northwest Arkansas, and southeastern Oklahoma. San Antonio, Austin, Tulsa, Killeen, and College Station all post Beautiful scores near 92, with highs in the low 70s, dewpoints near 47°F, and UV running around 5, moderate enough that sunscreen is worth packing for a long outdoor day but nothing to lose sleep over.

RHY Nice Weather Outlook Day 3

From there, the extended outlook (Days 4 through 7) describes a narrowing corridor of Nice weather sliding from Arizona and the south-central Plains early in the period toward Florida and back into the Desert Southwest by the weekend, as the bigger trough drags clouds, showers, and strengthening wind gusts across the Midwest and Northeast. None of those later days reach Beautiful on a wide scale, mostly because cloud cover, not heat or humidity, keeps pulling scores down. If you're planning outdoor time for the back half of this week, the desert corridor and Florida are the safer bets over the Great Lakes or interior Northeast.

The Towns That Show Up Every Single Day

Zoom out to the full seven-day outlook and the same small Arizona towns keep winning: Quartzsite, Ajo, Superior, La Paz Valley, Drexel Heights, and a string of unincorporated places around Yuma and Tucson are averaging scores in the mid-80s across all seven days, with Yuma itself clocking a 7-for-7 Nice-or-better week at an 84.8 average. It's the kind of result you'd expect from the desert in early November, dry air and light wind doing the heavy lifting day after day.

A Couple of Things Worth Knowing Before You Head Out

The Southwest's good weather isn't erasing last week's flooding. Oak Creek, Wet Beaver Creek, and several Four Corners rivers are still running high, and some roads around Yavapai County, Arizona remain closed. If you're traveling into that region for the nice weather, check road status before you go. Elsewhere, Baltimore's AQI reading today (68 effective, driven by AirNow data) and Los Angeles's typical haze are the only real air quality asterisks on an otherwise clean week; neither is unhealthy, but sensitive groups might notice. And nights are cool everywhere in this outlook, with lows commonly in the 40s even under all that sunshine, so the light jacket earns its keep at the edges of the day.
