April 03, 2026 Weather Recap: Tornadoes and Flash Floods

A complete recap of the April 03, 2026 severe weather outbreak. Read about the Oklahoma City tornado, Ohio flash flooding, and where the forecast went wrong.

April 03 Recap: A Forecast Miss, a 99 WIS Score, and Plains Tornadoes

Y'all, yesterday was a humbling day in the weather center. We woke up expecting a localized wind threat in the Ohio Valley. By nightfall, we were tracking a multi-state severe outbreak, a crippling ice storm, and a flash flood emergency. The National Weather Intensity Score peaked at 99.08 between 7 PM and 8 PM Central time. That is a rare number.

The Forecast vs. Reality

Let me be straight with you. Yesterday morning, our blog focused heavily on a Slight Risk for damaging winds from Michigan down through Ohio. We explicitly said the severe threat was not at catastrophic levels.

We were wrong.

While Chicago Midway did record a 69 mph wind gust, the atmosphere had much bigger plans out West. We missed the magnitude of the Plains threat in our morning update. The data showed a wind threat east, but the environment out west over-performed in a massive way. That is a lesson learned for all of us.

How the Day Unfolded

The day started with winter weather. A major storm dropped 14 inches of snow in Story, Wyoming, and 13 inches in Lame Deer, Montana. Up in Wisconsin and Upper Michigan, folks woke up to a half-inch of ice accretion. That caused widespread utility failures and left a lot of people in the dark.

By mid-afternoon, the severe threat escalated fast. Spotters confirmed a multi-vortex tornado in Fairfax, Missouri, just before 4 PM Central. We also had a confirmed tornado in Hopedale, Illinois.

As the sun went down, things got worse.

  • Giant Hail: In Mountain View, Oklahoma, three-inch hail fell from the sky. That is the size of a tea cup. It was bad enough to trap people in their vehicles and force rescues.
  • Flash Flooding: Over in Holmes County, Ohio, life-threatening flash flooding took over. Water rose two feet over the roads. The current was so strong it actually displaced shipping containers and forced swift water rescues.
  • OKC Tornado: Just after 9 PM Central, a tornado touched down right in Oklahoma City. It crossed the I-44 and I-240 interchange with estimated 100 mph winds and visible power flashes.

Oh, and right in the middle of all this, a 4.6 magnitude earthquake hit near Boulder Creek, California.

Looking Ahead to Today

So what happens now? The cold front is still pushing east. Today, the Storm Prediction Center has a Slight Risk back up for the Lower Great Lakes and the Ohio Valley. We are looking at a threat for damaging winds and a few tornadoes from Detroit down to Columbus and Pittsburgh.

Up north, the Weather Prediction Center is tracking the second half of this system. Heavy snow and icing will continue across the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest today.

Bottom Line

The atmosphere does not read our outlooks. Yesterday proved how fast a localized threat can explode into a nationwide event. We saw everything from tea cup hail to displaced shipping containers. Keep your weather radios on today, especially if you live in the Ohio Valley, and we will keep tracking this front as it moves east.
