June 10, 2026 Weather Recap: Midwest Tornadoes & 94 MPH Winds
A complete recap of the June 10, 2026 severe weather event, including a 94 mph wind gust in Wisconsin, Midwest tornadoes, and today's reloading storm threat.

Yesterday Was Exactly As Intense As We Feared
Y'all, June 10 is going to go down as a highly impactful day across the Midwest. We saw a volatile atmosphere do exactly what the data suggested it would. The most sobering moment came when we had simultaneous "Destructive" tagged Severe Thunderstorm Warnings and PDS Tornado Warnings active across multiple states. That is rare, and it tells you just how much energy was in the sky.
How The Day Unfolded
The day started with a damaging wind threat across the Plains. By the evening hours, that energy organized into a massive, destructive mesoscale convective system. Get this, a wind gust of 94 mph was measured at Wittman Field in Wisconsin. That is hurricane-force wind moving over dry land.
We also saw a significant tornado outbreak. A PDS tornado was reported in Appanoose County, Iowa. Spotters and the public confirmed tornadoes on the ground near Jameson and Princeton, Missouri, with significant tree damage reported. We also had confirmed reports near Moulton, Iowa, and Herington, Kansas.
The Ground Truth
The human impact from this event was severe. When that squall line moved through the Chicago and Milwaukee metro areas, over 233,000 utility customers in Illinois lost power.
Meanwhile, folks in West Virginia and Kentucky dealt with intense flash flooding. High water and mudslides were reported right on I-64 in Charleston, West Virginia.
Looking back at our forecast, the models had a very good handle on this setup. We expected a massive line of storms in the Upper Mississippi Valley, and that is exactly what happened. The warning lead times were solid, but the sheer scale of the wind and tornado threat was a lot for communities to manage all at once.
The Threat Reloads Today
Alright folks, here is the thing. The atmosphere is not done yet.
The Storm Prediction Center has an Enhanced Risk (Level 3 of 5) up for today across parts of Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, and Michigan. We are looking at a 45 percent probability for damaging winds, with a hatched area meaning gusts could exceed 75 mph. That is especially dangerous for areas that already have weakened trees and power lines from yesterday.
We also have a 10 percent hatched tornado risk, meaning isolated strong tornadoes are possible, and a 15 percent hatched risk for hail up to 2 inches across.
By Friday, this system pushes east. The SPC has a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) outlined from western New England down through the Mid-Atlantic. The primary hazard tomorrow will be damaging wind gusts from outflow-driven storm clusters. If you are planning to catch the Mariners at the Nationals on Friday night, be ready for potential rain delays and gusty winds.
Bottom Line
Yesterday was a destructive day, and today brings a renewed threat to some of the exact same areas. If you are in the Midwest or Great Lakes, you need to have multiple ways to get warnings today. Have your phones charged and your safe space ready.
