Snow in Northeast vs Heat in Southwest: Weather Whiplash Explained
From record blizzard recovery in RI to 90-degree heat at Spring Training, we break down the extreme weather contrast and tonight's fire danger.

Snow Drifts & Fastballs: Why This Week’s Weather Has an Identity Crisis
Alright folks, good evening. If you have been scrolling through your feeds today, you have probably seen two very different versions of America. One version is buried under nearly 40 inches of snow in Rhode Island after that historic bomb cyclone "Hernando" absolutely walled the Northeast. The other version?
It looks like summer.
Here is the thing. We are living through a classic case of meteorological whiplash tonight. While New England is still trying to find their cars (and in some cases, their highways), the Southwest is roasting. This evening isn't just about the forecast. It is about how the weather is messing with our internal calendars.
The Spring Training Swelter
Get this. Today marks a big day for baseball fans with Spring Training games kicking off in full force. But if you are in Arizona for the Dodgers or Diamondbacks games, you are not needing a light jacket. You need heavy-duty sunscreen.
Temperatures in the Desert Southwest are soaring into the 90s. That is record-breaking heat for late February. We are seeing a massive ridge of high pressure parked over the West like a defensive lineman that refuses to move. This heat is expanding into the Southern Plains too.

The Hidden Danger Tonight
While the heat sounds nice to my friends up in Boston right now, it comes with a catch. The Storm Prediction Center has issued a Critical Fire Weather risk for parts of New Mexico and West Texas tonight. This includes folks in Roswell and Hobbs.
The combination of this unseasonal heat, extremely dry air (humidity is dropping below 15%), and gusty winds means any spark could get out of hand fast. We just saw how bad things got with the Ranger Road Fire last week. Please do not burn anything outdoors tonight if you are in the Southern High Plains.
The Northeast isn't Done Yet
Now, for my friends in the Northeast who are sore from shoveling. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the atmosphere isn't giving you much of a break. We are tracking a "Clipper" system diving down from Canada.
Here is what that means for your Thursday:
- More Snow: It won't be another 3 feet, thankfully. But we are looking at light snow showers and snow squalls moving through Upstate NY and New England.
- Visibility Issues: These squalls can drop visibility to near zero in seconds. If you are on the roads, heads up.
- The Southern Soak: As this front drags south, it's going to bring rain and thunderstorms to the Southeast tomorrow. So if you are heading to the Nats vs. Yankees game in Tampa, bring a poncho.

The Bottom Line
This week is a perfect example of why we can't just look at one part of the map. We have blizzards breaking records in the East and heatwaves breaking records in the West. It is a chaotic end to February.
We are keeping a close eye on a potential pattern reload for next week that could bring more moisture to the East. But for tonight, stay cool in the West, stay warm in the East, and stay safe everywhere in between.
Y'all take care,
