Sunday Showdown: Southern Storms, Fire Risks, & The California "Snow-nami"

Happy Sunday, folks. I hope y'all are having a relaxing weekend, but if you have been watching the radar like I have, you know the atmosphere is not taking a day off. We are tracking a very active setup today that is going to impact a lot of travel plans and Sunday activities.

Here is the thing. We have a classic "squeeze play" happening. We have severe weather moving through the Southeast, a serious situation developing out West, and even some fire danger in the middle. Let's break it down so you can stay safe.

The Southeast: Squall Line Sunday

First up, let's talk about what is happening right now in the Deep South. That system that caused all the trouble in Texas and Louisiana yesterday has shifted east.

The Storm Prediction Center has issued a Slight Risk (that's a 2 out of 5 on the severity scale) for parts of Southeast Alabama, Southern Georgia, and the Florida Panhandle. We are talking about cities like Tallahassee, Albany, and Dothan.

This isn't necessarily a massive outbreak, but it is a dangerous line of storms. The main threat here is damaging wind gusts that could knock down trees and power lines, but we cannot rule out a spin-up tornado or two. If you are in Jacksonville or Gainesville, this line is heading your way later today.

If you have plans for an outdoor fish fry or you are driving home from church, keep your phone loud. These storms are moving fast. It might be sunny one minute and pouring the next.

California: The Atmospheric Firehose

Alright, let's look West. If you are in California, get ready for a very rough Monday. We have a potent atmospheric river slamming into the coast.

Here is what you need to watch:

  • The Sierra Snow Machine: This is huge. We are talking about snowfall rates of 2 to 3 inches per hour. The Winter Storm Warnings are calling for up to 8 feet of snow in the high elevations. This is not ski weather. This is "shut down the highway" weather.
  • SoCal Soak: For my friends in Los Angeles and Santa Ana, tomorrow (Monday) looks messy. The WPC has upgraded you to a Slight Risk for excessive rainfall. The ground is already wet, and this system could drop rain fast enough to cause flash flooding and debris flows, especially near those old burn scars.
  • Rare Tornado Risk: Get this. The SPC has actually highlighted a Marginal Risk for severe thunderstorms, including a brief tornado or two, for the LA Basin and Central Valley on Monday. That creates a very dangerous situation for the Monday morning commute.

The Plains: Don't Spark a Disaster

While everyone is watching the rain and snow, there is a sneaky threat in the Central Plains today.

Parts of Northwestern Nebraska and Southwestern South Dakota are under Critical Fire Weather conditions. It is extremely dry, and the winds are whipping up to 25 mph. If a fire starts out there today, it is going to spread fast.

I know it feels like winter, but the vegetation is dry. Please be careful with trailer chains, cigarette butts, or anything that could throw a spark.

Space Weather Bonus

And just to add a little flavor to the mix, the sun is waking up again. We are currently in a G2 (Moderate) Geomagnetic Storm watch. While this isn't the extreme X-class stuff we saw earlier this month, folks in the northern tier states might get a little aurora show tonight if the clouds break.

Bottom Line

  • Southeast: Stay weather aware today. That squall line packs a punch with wind and heavy rain. Have a way to get warnings.
  • California: Prepare for major travel disruptions Monday. If you don't have to drive through the mountains, don't. Watch for flooded roads in the valleys.
  • Plains: No burning today. The fire risk is real.

Stay safe out there, y'all!
