Washed Out in Texas and Baking in Miami: The Weekend Weather Pivot

Get this, y'all. The weekend is almost here, and we have some massive events on the calendar. The Crypto.com Miami Grand Prix starts practice runs tomorrow. Over in Austin, the iHeartCountry Festival is getting stages ready.

But the atmosphere is setting up some major roadblocks. We are looking at two completely different extremes across the southern United States.

The Texas Deluge

Over in Texas, the main story is water. A whole lot of it. The Weather Prediction Center has outlined a Slight Risk for excessive rainfall from San Antonio straight through Houston and over to the Central Gulf Coast.

The Houston area needs to pay close attention. The local National Weather Service office is warning that some spots could see over 6 inches of rain. We have a stalled frontal boundary draped across the region. Storms are going to line up and move over the exact same areas. Meteorologists call this training. It is exactly like train cars moving down a track. When heavy rain falls on the same ground for hours, flash flooding happens fast.

If you are heading to the ACTS Community Health Fair in Houston on Saturday, pack the rain gear and watch the road closures.

This is a sharp pivot from yesterday. We just watched a wild severe weather outbreak drop 5-inch hail near Camp Wood, Texas. Now the atmosphere is trading giant ice for tropical downpours.

Florida's Record Heat and Fire Risk

Now look at Florida. The vibe is entirely different. If you are heading to Miami for the Formula 1 race or the Rare Plant Festival, prepare to sweat. We are looking at near-record heat.

Temperatures in the Florida Peninsula are pushing toward 95 degrees. Let's put that in perspective. The normal high for Miami at the end of April is 83 degrees. You are looking at temperatures more than 10 degrees above normal. It is going to feel like the middle of August.

That heat is doing more than just making the grandstands uncomfortable. It is drying out the brush. The Storm Prediction Center has highlighted the central Florida Peninsula for elevated fire weather. We have strong westerly winds, low humidity, and very dry vegetation. A single spark can cause a lot of problems in these conditions.

Travel Headaches

Travelers also need to pack some patience. The heavy rain in Texas and Louisiana is going to cause headaches at the airports. Houston and New Orleans are both looking at high probabilities for ground stops and delays tomorrow.

  • Check your flight status before you leave for the terminal.
  • Expect delays if your routing takes you over the Gulf Coast.
  • Watch for rapidly changing visibility on the interstates.

The atmosphere is putting on a show this weekend. Pack the sunscreen for Miami, keep the umbrella handy in Houston, and know your alternate routes if the water starts rising.
